COTE DE TEXAS: Charlotte Moss' Winter House

Charlotte Moss' Winter House

Charlotte Moss' Aspen home which is the subject of her latest book, Winter House, recently sold for $8,500.000. Interestingly, the house was purchased by a Dallas couple, Carl and Peggy Sewell whose own beautiful home has been featured more than once in Southern Accents. The real estate listing for Winter House states the asking price was at a major price reduction and the house was being sold unfurnished. It is a six bedroom house with a large basement that appears to be a self contained "house within a house" as it has its own kitchen, living room, and bedrooms far away from the main level.

There is a great virtual tour that you can take, here. Not only that, but you can save the virtual tour to a zip file which converts the tour to still photographs, which then can be studied in great detail if you so desire. Much of the virtual tour shows views of bedrooms and the basement that were not shown in Winter House. If you are a fan of Charlotte's and the book Winter House, I would advise you to take a look at the virtual tour as soon as possible, because I can't imagine the site will contain this listing much longer since the house has sold.

Here, you can find an interview Charlotte did about happier times spent in Winter House. It does appear, though, that there will be future happy times for Charlotte. The Aspen Times, while reporting the sale of Winter House by Charlotte Moss and her husband, Barry Friedberg, also reports that a few weeks prior to the sale, a Barry Friedberg of New York, bought a Red Mountain ranch for a tidy $16,250,000. Below, are a few stills taken from the real estate listing for Winter House:

  1. Who on earth would want to buy a furnished house? Though tasteful - no denying that - it is someone else's taste. And this has always been my gripe with Ms Moss - it is all just toooo studied, as if she is working to some magic WASP formula.

  2. That house is enormous! There were so many pictures. She had a lot of wall series...practically in every room and hallway. Great find!

  4. The winter shots of this house are magical. From the interior photos you would never guess it was in Aspen.

  5. Wow! I think maybe some of the furnishings ended up in the store in New York. I swear I saw the series of framed maps in one of the shots hanging along the stairs. What a fun tour! Thanks!

  6. Yes -- count me in with the folks who just love House Tours of all sorts and kinds -- even the virtual ones! I have been on the Azalea Tour in Houston -- a wonderful tour of homes and gardens in the gorgeous spring! I really enjoyed your posting -- and love to check out Moss' homes (LOVE the one in New York!) Thanks for the eye candy (at least that kind is non-fattening! LOL)

Jan x hiding at home at Rosemary Cottage from the Heat and the horrible humidity!

  7. Wow Joni! Aren't you the eagle eye!! And re: what House of B&C said above- I once heard of a couple who bought a home and insisted that not only the furnishings come with the home, but the housekeeper too!

  8. That's nothing...one of our clients whose apartment we designed, had a Russian gentleman offer him $125 Million for the apartment and all the furnishings. The funny part of the story is that the client still has not even paid us for everything! So crazy!

  10. Once again, you are practically reading my mind. I was reading The Winter House right before I sat down to the computer! I have borrowed it from the Houston library, and I'll be returning it soon if any of you are interested.

  12. The house of beauty and culture,

I agree with you, although it is beautiful. It just wouldn't be the same to feel like you are just visiting or something.

  13. Thanks everyone! I'm glad you liked it. I had SO much fun reading the Aspen Times. It lists every real estate transaction, including! time shares. I can't tell you how many people from Houston I saw and found out what they paid or what they sold their property for! Jeez, it was fun! Thanks for the comments
