COTE DE TEXAS: A Swedish Treat For A Cold, Winter Night!

A Swedish Treat For A Cold, Winter Night!

image

As seen in the new French Elle Decor.   Since I don’t speak French – I can only surmise what the captions say!  Two Swedish antique dealers chose the Gustavian style for their home.  I love this picture of the enfilade – or rooms that are set up next to each other, without any halls.  This enfilade is comprised of three different rooms, at least.    I love how the floors are untreated – or I should probably say “look” untreated.  I suspect it took a lot of work to make these floors look so perfectly raw!!    While Americans think of Gustavian furniture as mostly painted gray – red paint was another popular finish as the chair in this picture shows.

image

A living area is furnished with gray painted consoles and table.    The arm chairs wear a blue checked fabric on the back.  The walls are faux painted.  Notice the beautiful oils – especially the round portrait on the fireplace.   A tall clock is to the right – not the typical Swedish Mora clocks Americans are so used to.  I think this room is very charming!

 image

Looking into the dining room and onto the kitchen area.  Here you can see how the faux painting actually is two toned, imitating a wainscoting.  The crystal chandelier is a  hallmark of a Gustavian interior.

 image

A beautiful set of dishes behind a glass fronted cabinet.

 image

A wonderful gilt clock hangs from the wall over a Gustavian chest.  The ribbed wood is typical of Gustavian decoration.

image

Small round table, armoire and chandelier.   Notice the thick Belgian type linen napkins and the adorable iron wine holder – these holders are popular items at antique shops.

image

Two pairs of barrel back Swedish chairs share space with a gilt and marble console.  These types of chairs were very popular then, as they are today. Notice the beautiful clock on the console.    The shades are simple white linen, a typical authentic Swedish design.

image

The Salon is a gorgeous room – the long Swedish sofa is gray with a gilded shell motif.  There are at least three mirrors, one rests on the settee.  Notice the candles attached to the mirror – this form of sconce was popular in Sweden – a very dark country during the winter – this way, the candlelight was reflected causing maximum illumination.  Just beautiful.

  1. I do think that the room is beautiful, and there are some pieces I would love to steal, but I don't know that I could live in a house like that. There is something about it that, to me, doesn't feel like home.

  2. Ok, with my rusty french, this is what I could make out of the larger print. I couldn't read the smaller LOL. I must need new glasses!

I hope I didn't butcher that too badly!

  3. Beautiful post Joni! I for one, am waiting with bated breath for pictures of your "new" kitchen. While this house is gorgeous, I love the more comfortable un-museum like feel of yours.

  5. I've really enjoyed getting to know this style through you, Joni. It'd be interesting to see a floorplan of this house. I don't know if I could live in a house with no halls.

I am loving all the grays, blues and creams. Did you notice the printed pillow on the settee? It looks like a faded, B&W photograph. Love it!

  6. These rooms take my breath away! I've been playing with the idea of painting my walls gray and this is exactly what I needed to see! Thanks so much for the beautiful post!

  7. Thanks for saving us the price of an expensive Euro magazine. I told my husband not to freak out when he saw the stack of French Xmas issues sitting out for holiday reading. Look at the dates, I said, and you'll see they go back at least 8 years. One rarely discards those lovely publications. So nice to visit and get a hit of Scandinavian design.

  8. Hi Joni, I have had the wonderful pleasure of visiting this mansion on a few occassions and I can attest to its spectacular beauty. The dealers don't live there but use it as a showcase for their lovely collection. They rent it out for special events, etc. It is truly like going back in time and walking through a perfectly preserved museum.

In spite of being a dealer of Swedish antique here in the US, I share some of your readers feelings that living there is not for me. Mixing antiques with contemporary pieces adds depth, beauty and comfort that full period rooms can sometimes lack.

Thanks for such a great post. The images are wonderful and the subject is dear to my heart.

All the best to you and your readers in the new year!

  9. It's all lovely, but I can understand niartist's reservations. There is a fine line between chic and bleak, when it comes to doing the Swedish look.
    It's all rather ghostly.
Still, I could move right in and be quite content with those wide scrubbed planks on the floor and the offhand marbling on the walls and that pair of spoon back chairs!

  10. Love the floors, the dishes, the clocks and paintings BUT...the furniture looks so uncomfortable, couldn't live like that.
Like others, I am waiting for your kitchen redo!!!!!!

  11. The dishes I love.... and much of the decor...but the furniture does look a little on the uncomfortable side (but that's just me)

  13. There are many beautiful elements of Swedish decor. I would love to have a couple of painted pieces in that great gray/blue shade. Joni what do you think woulddo the trick in your fave paint co's? I need color and warmth, mixing in gilt works well also. Thanks Joni!

  15. Hi Joni~
Although I don't really like the thought of living with gray for myself, I must admit it can look very chic, done in the right way. Just about anything looks good with Gustavian style anyway. Great post - thank you!

  16. I am quite in love with that wintertime colour palette. No one does it better than the Swedes.

Thanks for your sweet comments on my granddaughter's photo and yes, you got the name right! That is my maiden name you know! I love it! It fits her perfectly. Her younger sister is Elizabeth!

  22. Hey Joni...somehow I deleted my own comment! :)

anyways...I LOVE IT!!! Thank you so much for reminding us that "gray & white" is not always what it is about...one has to remember why the Scandinavian's decor style is the way it is. Lack of natural light most of the year...but, I do love the colors if done correctly...and to me this is a place I could live in...just add a few more flowers and linens and "presto". I'll take it! :)

Hope to see you soon at the shop! xo...deb

  25. I'm with Pigtown, while it is stylistically impressive and the pieces are stunning on their own, it drags me down. Too many gray days to have a home that reads so dreary. Nope, not for this Hostess. Hope you're well, Joni!

  26. Happy Holidays! Looks like you are celebrating lots of them.

Love this one. Juxtaposition photo poetry. I can't live with those gray blues, but I love the pictures. Added that gilt and worn wood sure makes it beautiful though.

  27. My favorite piece is the beautiful blue desk in the last picture. So very gorgeous. The very long sofa is beautiful, but doesn't look very inviting to hang out and watch House or Grey's Anatomy, that's for sure. Thanks for stopping by for a visit. We have sticky bows, but they're for mostly for my DH. I have to admit that I did use a few really late Christmas Eve when I was getting SICK of wrapping.

  32. Though this may be "cold" for some, there are some wonderful details to be borrowed and incorporated into any home whether Swedish or not! I love the Gustavian chandelier and the display of pewter dishes for example. This is a gorgeous post thank you for sharing it!

  33. Your post makes me feel like jumping right in- just like a "Swedish Fish" - I do love the light of all those gray tones. What we must realize is the light of Scandanavian countries. Subtle yet strong.
