COTE DE TEXAS: Feedbag Decor at Olivine

Feedbag Decor at Olivine

 image

Olivine, the wonderful home decor store in the Rice Village.  There’s a 20% off sale, store wide going on right now.

When Olivine, a home decor store,  moved  their location to the Rice Village last September, Helen – it’s charming owner – ordered a truckload of merchandise from French Laundry Home.   That small furniture and bedding company is heavily invested in the feedbag look, which I am slightly crazy for.    All the new merchandise had not yet arrived by the time of the grand opening -  but it’s in the store now.   So exciting!  Some of you might not be devoted to the feedbag and burlap look, but I am totally obsessed with it.    Last year I used feedbags bought on eBay for a client’s living room:

 image

A client’s living room where I used feedbag pillows.  I also included pillows made out of the Ikat fabric for when the client wants a change.

image

L.A.’s Dan Marty is often credited with helping fuel the feedbag/burlap decorative trend last year.   His fabulous showroom is sadly now closed.   While Marty’s furniture was upholstered in lowly burlap and feedbag instead of pricey fabrics – his pieces were still very, very expensive.

imageAt Olivine in Houston, they carry French Laundry Home, a furniture collection very similar to Dan Marty’s, but with much lower price points.  This chair in the front window caught my eye – I’d been anxiously waiting to see the new merchandise in person.

imageThe chair from the back.  The lettering is on both the front and the back.   Notice too how French Laundry Home leaves the very small nails exposed – a tiny detail  taken from antique French chairs that is seeing a resurgence.

imageThis is the chair from the new collection that I really wanted to see.  From French Laundry Home – here they used two different sizes of large nail heads.   A slipper chair, it is low and wide.

                                                                                                                                                 .

image The back is cane and its cushion actually looks like a pillow.

image

French Laundry home – a child’s sized armchair – too cute!

Side view with a close up of the exposed nails.

This stool could be used for multiple reaons.  I love the attached metal handles.

image

Top view.  Two together would be a great substitute for a coffee table.

image Another arm chair – this time adult sized – from French Laundry Home.  Again, exposed tiny nails – very trendy.

image

French Laundry Home also has many fabrics to choose from to upholster their different frames on custom orders.   Loving these two fabrics, of course.

image

French Laundry Home also sells bedding – notice the blanket cover looks like the heavy ticking linen.

image French Laundry Home pillows – made out of their fabrics – the postcard pillow is adorable.

image More French Laundry Home pillows.

image

Another bedding ensemble from French Laundry Home.  Helen at Olivine can order any other of these items.   Unfortunately French Laundry Home’s web site is not working!?!!

image

Olivine also carries a great assortment of merchandise from another company -  Bella Notte Linens.    I used this same whisper linen in white on my daughter’s bed.

 image

Elisabeth’s room with the Bella Notte whisper linen duvet and pillow in white – it’s so thin and soft, like tissue almost.

 image

The web site for Bella Notte is gorgeous – all the different combinations, fabrics and colors are shown.

image Bella Notte has many different fabrics besides linen – their satins and velvets are especially beautiful.   Olivine can special order any ensemble they don’t have in the shop.

image

I think Helen ordered the entire Vagabond Vintage catalogue for her store.  These make great market totes or travel bags.

image

Vintage Vagabond’s feedbag collection of totes, pillows and cushions.  They also sell feedbag runners.

image

I bought this large VV bag from Olivine – I store all my camera equipment in it.

image

Besides French Laundry Home, Vagabond Vintage, and Bella Notte Linens, there were other new items at Olivine that I especially liked:   these linen slipcovers are readymade for chairs.   Much cheaper than having them custom made – that’s for sure.

image  This turquoise chandelier was a blog sensation – but very pricey.

image

Olivine has this great copy of the turquoise chandelier.

image

These are a favorite new item on the market – in case you never have seen these, they are battery operated “candles” that look remarkably real.   Perfect for candeliers – especially since they are remote control.

image

And, Olivine also carries the entire line of Les Indiennes, the wonderful cotton hand blocked fabrics.

It’s a small, small world.  A few weeks ago HERE I wrote about my husband, Ben, aka Mr. Slipper Socks Man,  going out to pick up dinner, in his slipper socks, on New Years Eve, no less.  While in line, a woman recognized him after she looked down and noticed his sexy choice of footwear.   Imagine my surprise and sheer amazement when I walked into Olivine a few days ago and a shopper whispers to Helen, “Is that Joni?”   Sure!  That’s Joni.   The shopper was none other than the same sweet woman who recognized Ben on New Years Eve!  Small, small world of the Houston inner loopers.  We had a good laugh and I begged her to let me show her picture on the blog.  Isn’t she beautiful?   Maybe I should have some sort of award for any reader that spots both Mr. Slipper Socks Man AND me in two separate locations within the same month?

image The eagle eyed reader who recognized Ben’s shoes first.

  11. What great finds. That little chair is too sweet. And, the chandy is great. I remember emailing the designer when the original came out and it was way out of my budget...so nice to know there is a more affordable option. My sister is headed to Houston for a girls weekend and the rodeo...I am going to send her over to check the shop out. Have a good weekend.

  12. I love the whole feedsack thing or as we call it in France toile de jute.

I still have some antique french grainsacks available should anyone be looking for some. I have two antique french grain sacks that are the same design that you have shown in your photographs.

  13. I think that little stool with the handles is darling. So versatile. I am crazy for that blue chandelier and how cool to be meeting your readers! Not convinced this feedbag look is a trend with longevity. What do you think? I see it everywhere in every booth at the gift shows and that kinda is 'the kiss of design death' for most looks. And when the dollar stores do it..oy. I love, love, love this whole feedbag look. I hope it stays.

  19. Joni, you share my obsession with sacks. While I was at Washington Spaces, I blogged about French Laundry, Dan Marty, and Vagabond. Couldn't get enough! There's also a wonderful woman in California who works with authentic antique sacks -- no reproductions: www.3finegrains.com

Here's some compilations I did for the magazine, and I'm so sorry to hear about Dan Marty!

  20. Love the entire post, love the burlap and feedbag trend (still have a stack I have had for sale at antique shows, but now I think I will make slips for my dining chairs with them) and especially LOVE the story of Ben in his slipper socks out on new year's eve! Oh my gosh, you are still the funniest, cutest woulda been sister in law - I am cracking up thinking about it! If life were different, (you know what I mean), I would be giving him so much grief for those socks!!

  35. This is a trend, but I think one that has longevity. It's a subtle statement that can work in so many different environments as illusrtated in all the images. And, it seems practical enough for everyday use. Love it!

  36. Okay, I am in love with this shop! Could I please have one of everyting? Your daughters room is fabulous.

  37. Joni - Amazing as usual. I love your blog! Quick question - in Elizabeths room. The woven shades - at the top they appear to be lined, however light comes thought the bottom 2/3. I'm wondering - do you have a roller shade behind the woven shade? Is my assessment incorrect? Can you explain? Know you're busy - but if you want to send me an email send to wilson00@bellsouth.net

  44. What a fantastic store!!! Love all of the lines.

    ReplyDelete
  45. When it comes to inventory and display, Olivine is always beautiful and lovely and desirable. I promote the products whole-heartedly, but the customer service isn't as consistently lovely as the things in the store. A little more attentiveness and warmth and "I have time for you" attitude (esp. for the small but regular spenders) would go a long way in making this store the true gem it has the potential to be. I hope the owner will take this to heart and put as much focus on serving customers as she does on the rest of the store. I want to love and promote this store more, and that would do it.

  48. Sweet post, Joni! My first stop when getting to Houston is always Olivine.

I must tell you that my March issue of Veranda arrived yesterday - I practically needed smelling salts when flipping the pages of new home of Kay O'Toole. Simply beautifully styled to the sublime. Kay's home just reaches out from the pages to seduce me! I am in love, love, love!

Ginger Barber, Carol Glasser, Pam Pierce, Babs Watkins and Donna Temple Brown should even be "pea green" with envy!

One of your own personal favorites - the masterful Dan Carithers also has a home featured as well. The Misczynski's California modern is divine - the steel windows and doors inspiring. The whole is issue is a visual feast!

  49. Gorgeous shop!! Honestly I would be kicked out because of severe drooling on the merchandise! LOL! And the beds! Wow! Must visit Houston soonest! You are SO lucky to have a shop like this one! BTW -- Another Veranda reader that hyperventilated over Kay O'Toole's home! And the BOOKSHELF photo on page 101 -- serious eye-candy! What visual balance and charm too -- check the soccer ball on the floor! Love it!

I met Helen and she is so sweet and nice and helpful!
I stayed there for well over an hour because everyone was so friendly that I made instant friends with them and we talked and talked. Finally....I did some more shopping and got some beautiful linen napkins with birds embroidered on them and some heavenly perfume spray.
I had to leave to pick up kids from school or I would easily have stayed all afternoon!

  68. I don't see feed bags becoming a classic. They are interesting as conversation pieces for a casual sitting area - not for much else unless used in a kitchen/breakfast room of some sort. I would not invest heavily at the moment.

Good design is costly, but poor design is more costly. I recommend using sparingly in short term.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Fabulous, inspiring pictures!! I love, love, love burlap!!

  70. Joni, another great post full of wonderful information and eye candy. I am going to check out the Bella Nolte sight. I am still LOOOOving Elisabeth's room. She has to feel like a princess in that bed. Lucky girl to have you for a Mom, Kathysue

  71. OK I definitely need to make the trek inside the loop to see Olivine's new storefront! I love this look, though admittedly don't have much of it in my current decor (in part because I have a rather hard to shake addiction to color and in part because my husband has dubbed this look as "feedbag chic" and makes fun of it to know end -- but what does he know?!). Also, a lot of these items remind me of the online store Mothology, but I suspect they have the same sources.

  72. Joni I agree with some of the other readers above. You have taken Texas (Houston in particular)to new heights. I have to be honest I thought Houston was a place to pass through until I started reading your blog. Now I am dying to see some of your haunts.

  73. Oh Joni...your posts are always such fun. I must be in the minority...but not on the feedbag bandwagon. Seems all over. I do like seeing the nail head trim tough (working on some myself and need ideas)

And the turq chandy....swoon. I LOVE and have always loved that. To the poster above that swooped in and bought one...Jealous!!

  84. Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at this forum. There is such a thing, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For quite a long time, I earn money with the help of these programs.
I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and my first investment was 500 dollars only.
Right now, I managed to catch a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Visit my blog to get additional info.

Um, having said they wouldn't work in my home, I remember that I JUST added some white burlap drapes in my dining room! What a dope I am! (But they're not feedbags...)
    Love the blog...

  86. Thank you so much for your quick response about the kids chair!!

Also, I would love for you to do another post about ranch style homes like the one I am in, in Briargrove. The homes you showed in your "small houses" post were GREAT inspiration and I actually know a few people who live/lived in the ones that you showcased! I love seeing how people freshen them up with remodeling and furniture.

I am always trying to change my house around. I worked with Elizabeth Munger who was with Chandos Dodson at the time. I loved what we did, but of course I was not able to do the entire house. I need some more ideas!

Hope you have had a wonderful weekend!

  93. Hello Joni!

As usual a WONDERFUL post. I have a request....I am working on my living room layout and I am unable to find many "inspiration" rooms that incorporate a television. Can you show us what yours looks like? Other homes you have decorated? Most photos are styled without it and I need your divine inspiration for a functional and fabulous look. Thoughts?

It has been a joy reading your blog. Thank you!

  95. Good day, sun shines!
There have were times of troubles when I didn't know about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright stupid person.
I have never imagined that there weren't any need in large initial investment.
Nowadays, I'm happy and lucky , I begin to get real money.
It's all about how to choose a correct companion who uses your funds in a right way - that is incorporate it in real business, parts and divides the income with me.

You can ask, if there are such firms? I'm obliged to tell the truth, YES, there are. Please get to know about one of them:

  96. Hi Joni, I have to say this post sort of scared me because I love vintage fabric so much and when I see it used everywhere it makes me want to cry.

I think it is somewhat of a trend now but I will stash some of the good stuff away for a while and pull it out again in a few years. Sort of like a favorite pair of shoes.

I would also like to commend your husband for his bravery in being photographed laying on the couch in his slipper socks. The mark of a true manly man!

    warmly, kelley

ps what's up with the investment comments?

  97. I love vintage fabric as well, and have a closet full of it! However, the reality is that the fabric can tend to be fragile, and in no way can stand up to the wear and tear of a lively household...I have spent alot of money on custom slipcovers fashioned out of vintage fabric, only to have it rip and tear within months. The French Laundry line is made in North Carolina, top to bottom. (Yay USA!). Many of the patterns-like the stripes-are just that-STRIPES-nothing depressing or sad that i can see in that! Reproductions of anything simply take a design and make it more attainable to the many, rather than the few.

  98. Excellent blog, and love the post. We've carried much of this in our store, and it is definitely a hot trend at the moment. That said, you do have to agree with a few of the comments that this is a "trend," but used sparingly, it does have a timelessness that should endure. Keep up the excellent work!

  99. My friends keep telling me that the cutest shop just opened in Rice Village and that I have to go over and take a look and possibly buy everything in there. Little did I know it was Olivine and that they had moved without telling me. I am so glad to see them on this blog (which my friends also kept telling me to check out) Love the blog and love that Olivine is having a sale!!!
