COTE DE TEXAS: A JEWELRY GIVEAWAY ON COTE DE TEXAS!!!

A JEWELRY GIVEAWAY ON COTE DE TEXAS!!!

Today, Cote de Texas sponsor Karen Sugarman Designs is offering a fabulous giveaway.  And it all has to do with Elizabeth Taylor! Yes! Elizabeth Taylor.  But let’s start at the beginning of the story – there’s always a story.  Karen Sugarman designs one of a kind, couture jewelry – with a twist.  She’s been a long time sponsor on Cote de Texas – and I am a huge fan of her work.  I think it’s so gorgeous – and unique.  Here’s a necklace I have from Karen:

image

It’s a beautiful piece made of freshwater pearls and stones.  I think it’s stunning.  I love my necklace so much that for Christmas, Ben and I got one for our sister-in-law:

image

Shannon’s necklace is similar to this one – it’s like mine, but with darker red stones that go better with her coloring.  Beautiful, right?

image

This antique watch on a necklace caught my eye on Karen’s web site.  I love the way she styles her designs – with décor items, like these antique books.

image

I’ve always adored this one with shells and a beautiful cameo.  It would be so pretty in the summer!

Besides necklaces, Karen makes earrings and bracelets and she specializes in jewelry for brides.  Most of her work is custom and one of a kind.  All the pieces she has previously made for clients are shown on the web site for inspiration when designing your own piece.

Recently Karen contacted me with great news about one of her new designs – her necklace was going to be in a movie!  It’s an interesting story she tells – all about Elizabeth Taylor:

image

Elizabeth Taylor’s famous diamond ring, auctioned off at Christie’s.

Recently, Christie’s auctioned off the famed jewelry collection of the late actress Elizabeth Taylor.  Taylor had a love of expensive stones that was shared by her husband, actor Richard Burton.  He gifted her with stunning pieces that over time were worth a king’s ransom.  The auction took place late last year and is said to have broken all records – the final total was more than $137 million.   Three of the biggest items were gifts from Burton:  the Taj Mahal diamond (a 40th birthday gift) and the 33.19 carat diamond ring – shown above.  The pearl and diamond necklace “La Peregrina” – sold for $11.8.  Burton paid only $37,000. for it.  Amazing.

image

Just a few of her famous diamonds.  The diamond necklace was sold in 1978 to fund a hospital in Africa.  She is wearing the diamond ring, which it is said, she wore every single day.

image

Not all the jewelry auctioned at Christie’s was made of diamonds.  This necklace received a lot of press because of its uniqueness and provenance and its chic look.  Called the Opera Token Necklace, this was a gift from the famous costume designer Edith Head.  Made of antique ivory opera tokens from the 18th and 19th century, the necklace was valued at $1,500 to $2,000 but was auctioned at $314,500.00!!   The tokens are made of ivory and encircled in gold.

One person who was enraptured by the token necklace was sponsor Karen Sugarman.  She wasn’t alone – other jewelers were looking for ways to recreate this stunner – but Karen really surpassed them all with her own design:

image

Karen Sugarman’s own Ivory Opera Token Necklace!!

AND…here is the necklace Karen is now offering for sale! DYING!!! I want one sooo badly!!  DROOL!!!!  The really neat thing about this necklace is the buyer can customize the tokens to reflect their love of operas, ballets and symphonies. The original necklace and Karen’s design features 13 tokens, BUT you can order as few as 1 token, 3 or more – (odd numbers only.)   These scrimshaw tokens are made of pre-ban ivory and are hand lettered.

The back of the necklace shows the seat and box numbers.

You can choose from one, three, or more tokens – 13 is the maximum.  I wonder if you could order this in a bracelet size?  It would make such a cute charm bracelet too.

Karen made this special necklace for her mother in law for Mother’s Day.  It was customized with her beloved Boston Symphony Orchestra on it.

Now, the story gets even more exciting for Karen!

Her husband’s cousin is directing the Lifetime Movie “Liz and Dick” starring Lindsey Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor and Grant Bowler as Richard Burton.  Since Karen had just completed the famous Elizabeth Taylor Ivory Token Necklace, the director showed it to the Costume Designer, Salvador Perez who chose to put it in the movie!   Karen was told there were 66 costume changes in the movie, so, it’s always possible the necklace will end up on the cutting room floor but – Karen is thrilled just for the chance.

image

Liz and Dick is being filmed now, and here is Lindsey Lohan dressed up as Elizabeth.  The resemblance is striking for a red haired girl with freckles!  She really has channeled the actress.

Here, the two stars of Liz and Dick recreate a famous photograph of the two lovers.  Lohan really looks exactly like Elizabeth here!

image

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor fell head over heels in love while filming the movie Cleopatra.  Both were married to others and their romance was a major Hollywood scandal.  The movie Liz and Dick will recreate their passionate affair.

image

This photograph taken of the couple kissing was what alerted the world to their love affair.  Today, few stories match this one for the paparazzi storm it created.

image

The couple were madly in love and unable to stay apart, despite both being married to others.  Eventually they wed and their marriage lasted 10 years, but broke up due to Burton’s alcoholism.  They reconciled a year later and married again - which lasted only one year.  After their second divorce, Burton was quoted as saying:  'If I live to be a hundred, I'll always love that woman.'   So romantic!!!   He doted on Elizabeth, buying her the famous jewels and even a yacht, The Kalizma – named after their three daughters – Richard’s Kate, Elizabeth’s Liza, and Maria, the adopted daughter of Richard and Elizabeth.

image

Here in the movie Liz and Dick, Lohan recreates famous scenes aboard the Kalizma.

image

Filming is taking place on this yacht – a look alike of the vintage Kalizma.

image

Here, the actors act out a heated argument on the movie set of the Kalizma.

image

The actual yacht – the Kalizma, a beautiful vintage boat built in 1907.  Gorgeous.  Can you imagine owning this????     Burton bought it mainly so that they could bring their dogs to Europe and not have to worry about the strict quarantine laws.  Today, the yacht has been renovated and looks different with an additional center story added.

The lovers sailing on the Kalizma.

The boat was later sold to a billionaire who spent three years renovating it.

Look at the portals on the left.   The wood is incredible.

Notice the carved wood at the back corners.

Charming porcelain sink in this cabin.  Notice the carved headboard.

Today, the Kalizma is known as My Kalizma and has been totally updated and restored.   There is even a hot tub on the boat.

Same dining room chairs.

That carpet????  Oh well.  My Kalizma is available for rent – but you have to be Oprah to afford it!  Still, I love the romance of the vintage yacht and I can’t wait to see “Liz and Dick” to see how they portray the inside of the cabins.

image

I tried to find a picture of Lohan in costume wearing the Karen Sugarman’s Ivory Opera Token necklace, but no luck yet.   There are only a few photographs of Lohan in costume that have been released, so hopefully she’ll be wearing it one scene.

  1. Hi Joni, I love how you take a simple idea, spin an entire design story around it then wrap it up with a neat little bow. Karen's jewlery is very beautiful. However, I already have enough jewelry to be suitably bedecked for lunch with The Queen. So, I will let your other readers vie for the prize. None the less, I shall "Like" Karen's website.

  5. Fun Post! I have followed Karen for quite a while. She is very talented and I love her combinations of materials, new, vintage, precious and semi...just beautiful.

I love this post for another reason. Memories of the tales my dad share with our family after his experiences with Elizabeth Taylor. My dad was a sea captain, sailing the largest ships in the world to all seas of the world. However, when I was a child, he wanted to stay closer to home, so he was the Captain of a large yacht, the Hyding, based in Newport Beach, California. In 1956, he took Michael Todd and Elizabeth Taylor to the coast of Mexico while Mr. Todd was filming Around the World in Eight Days. "...yes, she is very beautiful...yes, her eyes ARE blue-violet..." he confirmed. And the stories...there were stories...stories that would make the tabloids today. Sadly, Michael Todd was killed in an airplane crash about a year later, when Liz was 26. They had been married for just over one year. Mike Todd was her third husband out of seven.

Thanks for the memories...I will enter the drawing...I love Karen's work! Thank you to both of you for the opportunity.
    xoxo, Chris

Love it.! (Laviza@verizon.net)

  16. My first reaction was, NO WAY can Lindsay Lohan pull off Elizabeth Taylor. Then I scrolled back and forth between the photos... If Lindsay lays off the lip injections, the resemblance is actually pretty good. Weird!

The jewelry is gorgeous. Do you know anything else about the opera tokens in the original necklace? Were they considered disposable, like tickets, or were they more like a key or a membership card used to access the owner's theatre box for every performance? I wonder if more could be found in the Paris flea markets, if someone (like Claudia of The Paris Apartment!) knew where to look? I love the opera necklace. If I was the winner, that's what I'd choose -- and I'd ask for French, Italian and Austrian opera houses on my tokens, with names like Maria Theresa or Marie Antoinette, because why not?

Also, when will you be launching the yacht giveaway? Because I TOTALLY need a Yacht of One's Own so I can bring my dogs with me when I go to Europe!!! ;-)

  62. Back in December I was captivated for three days as I watched the Christie's auction online. My cousin had gone to the pre show and sent me the catalog. Enraptured does not describe the fervor she and I felt for the Token Necklace. I even wrote a blog post about it:
    http://decortoadore.blogspot.com/2012/01/charmed-im-sure.html

My daughter is a fashion design student so we both love and admire Edith Head. (I've written about her too on the blog.:) She is a favorite of the Fashionista who graduates with a Bachelor's in December. Wouldn't that be THE gift?

There was no pricing on Ms. Sugarman's website. That scares me a bit because I NEED that necklace.

My fingers cannot be crossed ANY tighter.

  90. Karen's designs are all so unique and timeless that it is truly difficult to choose just one. However, one piece absolutely took my breath away due to it's simplicity, timeless design and connection to a bygone era. While the Opera necklace takes you back to the glamorous Hollywood Regency period, Karen's Grisaille Cherub Edwardian Silver Paste Locket Necklace - Elyse Necklace - harkens back to an era that I lose myself in on a regular basis. My love of Victorian romance novels--not the cheesy ones, but the epic stories of Lords and Ladies and the Love that conquers all regularly allow me a glimpse into the world of the well heeled and those who aspire to it.

I am not sure if it was the antique Victorian locket with a putti image--knowing it once graced a lady's décolletage more than a century ago; the surprise of the Byzantine cross in 24k gold vermeil, floating in a sea of tiny emeralds hiding behind the putti on the back side of the locket; or if it was just the beauty found in the naming of the piece, alluding to the inclusion of a paste locket, something I could only read about in many a favorite novel as ladies of lesser means were wont to wear to immitate real jewels. The entire piece just breaths romance.

    Well that was my favorite.

The sailor's valentines are so sweet, and the Yvette earrings in any of the color combinations are just beautiful. The Hellebores necklace featured at the end of your blog is just gorgeous as well. I think it's great that you are featuring beautiful, wearable art like this on your blog.

  114. I was introduced to Karen Sugarman jewelry through Cote de Texas about 3 years ago. I fell madly in love with a gorgeous pearl necklace and l posted a link to another stunner on my blog. My DH saw the entry and surprised me with my 1st Karen Sugarman necklace for our anniversary. She has become to go-to gift for all my life celebrations. I have at least 6 of her pink and black boxes in my jewelry box and wear her pieces almost everyday. That being said, the opera necklace is the most amazing gorgeous design I have ever seen! Kudos to Karen. Is it wrong to want something so badly!

  124. Not only is your blog one of the very best out there, but then your contests offer the most exquisite items! The details of Liz and Dick, the pictures, the information on the jewelry design of the token necklace, it is all the bomb. You put such time and attention into your posts....it is clear you love what you do. I liked the Charmed Im Sure single strand necklace. Why, because if I were to have some extra funds, it would be actually attainable. But, like you, there is nothing better than a bracelet loaded with charms..........and those ivory tokens are so unique and oohlala!

  125. I love how Karen recreated the Edith Head, necklace! I remember when I first got the set of catalogs for the auction and amidst all the glorious "rocks" and major jewels was this simple yet "can't take my eyes off it necklace." Dotti is right "oohlala." I'm clicking over to Karen's site next. Great post and as a Ms. Taylor fan, you got all the details right. Us designers are suckers for books, I'm guessing we have a similar collection. :)

  140. Hi Joni-

I’ve just come up for air after a wild but wonderful day of answering emails and speaking with several of your readers about the Opera Token Necklace as well as other jewelry items on my website. Your reach is far and wide and I truly believe you have some of the nicest subscribers to your blog that I have ever encountered! I just did not want the day to end without letting you know that your post about Taylor/Burton was not only deliciously romantic, but took on such a unique perspective about the ship where this love affair began. Your attention to detail in searching out the information on this gorgeous yacht made for simply compelling reading (and with wonderful photos to enhance the story).

Although we have never met in person (even after all these years) - I knew immediately that your funny and cheeky style of writing made you someone I would someday love to meet in person. As time progressed, I realized that your cute humor was only upstaged by your selflessness in helping to shine the light on others while simultaneously engaging your very faithful readers. It is this charming combination of fun and altruism that has made you such a resounding success. Thank you so much for your very flattering and kind thoughts and for allowing me to be a part of your endearing legacy to the design community.

I don’t know how many of your subscribers will come back to monitor the comments and/or if they have a feed - but I do want to add a few thoughts. Several of your readers had suggested that the Opera Tokens would make a lovely charm bracelet and/or single bracelet accent. That is something that I had previously thought of, but not yet implemented. If you are interested in pursuing this idea, please get in touch and we can work out the particulars.

Another of your readers asked this morning in a phone call - if I would consider making Opera Token earrings and/or creating tokens with monograms. I was raised in the South (Louisiana) and monograms were a way of life when I was growing up. Everything - including sheets, shirts, belt buckles and even the little iconic Lily Pulitzer button-on handbag covers in needlepoint were fair game! I think this is a wonderful idea and I am happy to give anyone a quote if interested.

If you sent an email or left a phone message today - I promise I will get back to you (hopefully tomorrow) as soon as I can wade through all the inquiries. I am just delighted with all the lovely responses and cute comments and I cannot wait to see who the winner will be (and what they will actually choose). Once again - thank you Joni for such a wonderful opportunity to meet so many of your charming subscribers.

    Many Thanks,
    Karen
