COTE DE TEXAS: A NEW GIVEAWAY FROM THE FRENCH GARDEN HOUSE!!

A NEW GIVEAWAY FROM THE FRENCH GARDEN HOUSE!!

image_thumb21_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

I think everybody who is into interior design has had one special style that they have loved throughout their lives.  For me, it’s been French design – probably I should say Country French design.  Ever since I was first exposed to it when I was a young teenager, I feel most connected to this style of design.  I don’t know if I can even say why -  but I think it’s the shape of the furniture, the feminine curves of the chair backs and legs and arms, the warm fruitwoods of the buffets and armories, the comfy chaise longues and the linen toiles, the gilts and boiseries, the parquet floors and stone walls, the common shutters and tiled roofs, the landscapes of lavender and olive trees, the fountains and reflecting pools – together, it moves me more than any other design style.  Country French or the design found in Provence and other southern regions of France is so beautiful it’s hard to imagine anyone not being moved by the landscape of the area, the stone farmhouses and the charming old towns.  Here are some examples of country French:

vickiarcher13_thumb2_thumb_thumb_thu[1]

There is beauty in the fields of lavender and olive trees.

masb5_thumb1_thumb_thumb_thumb_thumb

And there are the beautiful houses in the country,  made of stone and tile roofs.

world-of-interiors_thumb1_thumb_thum[1]

There is the lit a la polonaise with silk fabrics next to simple painted furniture.

image_thumb2_thumb_thumb_thumb_thumb

There is the lure of hidden courtyards behind wooden doors and iron transoms.

image_thumb3_thumb_thumb_thumb_thumb

There are urns from tiny to large.

image_thumb39_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

And a clock on the side of a Provençal mas.

image_thumb41_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

There are stone walls and light blue shutters along with a charming pergola at the end of the gravel terrace.

image_thumb83_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Here’s an entry hall in a mas with double front doors and old stone floors.

image_thumb4_thumb_thumb_thumb_thumb

And antique plates hang on boiserie instead of fine oil paintings.

image_thumb43_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

What’s there not to love about a mas with light aqua shutters and a tiled roof?

image_thumb45_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Or a town center in Provence with hanging lanterns?

image_thumb46_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Just go inside a mas with original beamed ceilings and stucco walls to see its appeal.

image_thumb47_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Could you resist lavender fields with a tiny Provencal town in the background?

image_thumb48_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Or try to resist a parterre planted with box.

de-rohan-chabot-french-chateau-10-su

Visit a bedroom in a restored French chateau.

image_thumb50_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Or enjoy the sight of an incredible collection of copper pots at Chateau Ansouis.

image_thumb53_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

This mas has a typical French gravel terrace along with a pergola.

image_thumb54_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Find the beauty in a kitchen with a tiled floor and a beamed ceiling.

image_thumb55_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Enjoy the dappled sunlight on a covered terrace.

image_thumb56_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Is there a prettier combination of colors – terracotta and gray?

image_thumb57_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Enjoy a brunch on a front terrace.

image_thumb59_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Or rent a suite at a Provencal hotel.

image_thumb61_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Find the beauty in a kitchen of an French antique dealer.

image_thumb63_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Younger Frenchman are turning to grays and monochromatic interiors.

image_thumb66_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

But, there is still beauty in the old ways.

image_thumb67_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

The charm of a bakers rack and a crystal chandelier.

image_thumb68_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Could there be anything more beautiful than this….

image_thumb70_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Or this, a dining room both rough and luxe.

image_thumb73_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Mirror inset cabinets and tables along with a fabulous sink.

de-rohan-chabot-french-chateau-12-po[2]

Three toiles, though most French use only one.

image_thumb74_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

The grass goes right up to the swimming pool edge.

image_thumb75_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

The quiet beauty found in all gray.

image_thumb76_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

And a pantry filled with baskets and linens.

image_thumb77_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Box and gravel and wisteria and shutters – hard to resist…

image_thumb78_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

As is this dining room in a Provençal mas.

image_thumb79_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Even the churches are beautiful in their simplicity – 12th century Abbaye du Thoronet.

image_thumb80_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

Wire covered pantry doors filled with cream & white dishes and glasses.

3129362320_5794ea48ff_b_thumb1_thumb

Small and beautiful!  Just perfect.

A French farmhouse kitchen couldn’t be prettier.

image_thumb95_thumb_thumb_thumb_thum

The beauty of Provence – it’s like a painting…

4163733813_28a848d4cd_b_thumb1_thumb[1]

that so many artists have found irresistible.   Paul Cezanne.

  112. First, your post had me in tears looking at the glorious long valley views across the lavender. This is the trip I want to take my daughter on for high school graduation. And then the French Garden House site. It took only two keyclicks to find the Vintage Rhinestone Crown Tiara Miss America Preliminary. I started collecting vintage crowns when my daughter was born, since it's just us too, i.e. home of princesses, and this one is just stunning. Many more items at the site for my wish list. Thank you for the generous giveaway. What fun!

  120. What a lovely escape to Provence! There were so many wonderful things at French Garden House, but like you, and so many others, I'm quite taken with the silver cuff bracelets, "A" - the same one you picked - being my favorite. I collect antique silver napkin rings and just love the look of those cuffs. Now I'm wondering how to turn a napkin ring into a cuff bracelet. I also loved the silver Victorian floral napkin ring for my collection. And when it comes to lavender and purple, well I find it hard to resist those Classique Purple Drinking Glasses, those oversized Provence earthenware cups and plates, and that adorable antique Aynsley trio Lavender Tete a Tete set. And I love that antique folding wine table, though I'm not sure where I'd put it. Is that enough? :-)

  133. I think this may be your most popular give-away yet. The first time I looked, there were 75 comments. About four minutes later there were 126. Show me any type of antique French linen and I'm sold - if it has a monogram on it that happens to be one of my initials, and I'm pretty sure I would sell my soul to the devil to get it. But then there are all those silver pieces - everything from beautiful silver hat brushes to gorgeous serving pieces. If I absolutely have to limit myself to two favorite items, they would be the linen duvet cover and the white leather driving gloves. I'm also intrigued by the wax orange blossom wedding tierras though. Really, it would be easier to list the things that don't interest me (tole trays and pink Lustreware, in case you are interested).

Thanks for offering this generous give-away and thank you to French Garden House.

  136. Hi, Joni,

I'm so intrigued by the two Globe de Mariée Ormolu Wedding Display Glass Domes. I've never seen anything like them.

And I'm also surprised because I have made four similar things out of porcelain. The first one I made was for my daughter's wedding. She used it on top her wedding cake and kept it in a glass dome I had given her.

I love the symbolism of each element. Thanks for the new addition to my "eye candy" bookmarks!

    Cheers,
    Jeanette

The lovely knives would compliment our mother-of-pearl formal placemats.

Congrats on one of the best blogs. This entry, especially pleasing.

You have used the word "mas" previously. I asked our Quebec native French speakers the literal translation. Google Translate offered none. I suggested an unlikely abbreviation of "maison" but they had never heard this for. Do you have a literal definition and have you noticed it in French writing? If so, I can't understand why this word isn't translated by Google, usually fairy reliable.
