This summer I did a story about a house in Houston designed by Kara Childress. It is one of the most luxe houses here – owned by a family of philanthropists. I loved the story because the couple also live in Southern California on the grounds of the beautiful Provencal styled spa Cal-A-Vie. Both their houses are gorgeous, both are very different. Kara designed the Houston house and it was also featured in Architectural Digest.
Through the years I’ve shown pictures of Kara Chlidress’ designs – most of the photographs have come from that fabulous design book – Segreto:
Leslie Sinclair’s book Segreto features several of Kara Childress’ projects.
I recently was surfing Houston interior designers – and saw that Kara Childress Inc, Interior Design now has a gorgeous web site that I had never seen before. Wow. It’s a stunner. I love Kara’s work. She’s been designing for a long while now and I love how her look has evolved over the years. Yes, she can design a house like the luxe French one shown above – but she can also design rooms that everyone can relate too. I love how she mixes antiques and new items together and I love that she has a symmetrical eye. Her rooms are so balanced and pleasing and soothing.
So – enjoy these photographs from her web site:
In the earlier story on the French house – the images from Architectural Digest are so different than those on Kara’s web site. Here, is the AD shot of the living room.
And here is the same room from Kara’s web site – you can see here a much bigger view. I didn’t realize there was a table in the middle of the room. And now you can see there are different sconces on the different consoles. I love the matching chandeliers. And I love – that even though this room is so dressy - the sofas and chairs look comfortable and very welcoming.
I love the cupid on the side table in this close up shot.
And in this close up – you can see the pretty chairs pulled up to the center table that divides the large room in two.
The original Architectural Digest photograph of the dining room.
Here we can now see the entire dining room – from the new, wonderful Architectural Digest web site. Love this room – I love the symmetry and the back trumeaus. Love the chandelier and the skirted table, which is a huge surprise. Again, in such a dressy room – Kara’s use of the skirted table takes it down a notch – making the room accessible, warm and welcoming, all hallmarks of great design.
But, from Kara’s web site, with a different photographer, the colors are much softer and prettier:
Notice the difference in this photograph from Kara’s web site and the Architectural Digest picture.
I love how the candles were used in this photoshoot – even though the house is filled with priceless antiques, Kara used candles – something anyone can replicate in their own dining room.
This family room was a surprise that was first shown on Kara’s web site – love it – love the colors – soft ivory, cream and aqua blue.
Here’s a close up of the vignette by the fireplace. Love the pair of chairs and the fabric and the mirror and the chandeliers. Love this room!!
From Architectural Digest – the beautiful music room.
Again, on Kara’s web site – the music room is so much softer, and prettier in my opinion. The walls are soft blue, the sofas are blush.
A close up shows pink Fortuny pillows on the very lightest of blush sofas. I love these photos and could stare at them forever – they are HUGE. You feel like you are in the room and can see every delicious detail, like the marble pedestal in the corner.
You can see many more photographs of this wonderful house on Kara’s web site.
In another house – Kara used warm colors and an antique settee in front of a wall of windows. A leather covered day bed divides the room.
And on the other side of the room – notice the coffee table, an antique gilt wood capital! We’ve seen the one that Ginger Barber used and the copies from Restoration Hardware – but this antique one is beyond fabulous. And I love how she styled the table with the santos and antique books. I really, really am dying to use a capital as a table!!!
In another house, Segreto painted these beautiful cabinets. This is one of my all time favorite kitchens. I love the antique terra cotta floor and I love the island. Against the backsplash are tiles from Chateau Domingue. It’s just a beautiful kitchen.
In this close up – you can see the checked fabric in the cabinet doors on the right and the pretty arched sink alcove. Again, symmetry makes this a peaceful looking space.
In the same house, Kara used dual light fixtures, mirrors and consoles. And – she used antique armoire doors against the back wall.
In another house, this is one of my favorite living rooms of Kara’s. I think it’s because I love the window treatments. In order to hide the “dead space” – I usually use textured blinds, but instead, Kara used these soft, scalloped valances and they are so romantic looking! Now I am anxious to do this too! At first glance, it looks like there are two matching sofas, but they are totally different. And Segreto did the walls and ceiling – you can see how wonderful the treatment looks.
And in this closeup – you can see the antique mirror and sconces Kara used, along with a collection of yellow ware from France. Simple, but chic.
In another house, I love this dining room – the light blue velvet chairs are so pretty, and I really like how the blue plays off the two paintings that flank the windows.
In another house – in this family room – notice how she handled the flatscreen. It hides behind a tapestry. Ingenious!
And a close up of the tapestry! Great idea!
Kara’s powder rooms are really beautiful – this one, with the blue and white sink – styled with blue and white porcelains and a great linen skirt is a favorite of mine.
How about this one – with a faux bois console. Look at the faux limb legs. This is a first for me – and what a great idea!
In this powder bath she designed it with antique doors and old hardware and old tiles on a slab with a vessel sink. Kara used an old lantern to style it. I don’t know this – but I am guessing the tiles and lantern came from Chateau Domingue. If not, they sell these same tiles.
And finally, this powder room is so pretty. A huge slab holds another slab with a fountain turned into a sink. And I love the common lantern next to it. Kara used simple sconces – keeping a heavy hand away. Great decisions. Love this.
I think this is such a pretty vignette – and again, great styling. I am so in love with these giant antique apothecary jars. So pretty against the rough wood trumeau.
And here, another vignette I really love. The mix of the antique concrete table with the screen and French chairs with blue velvet. Love it all.
One of my favorite Kara Childress design projects was for her parents when they downsized after retirement. Segreto did the wall treatment and Leslie told the story of the renovation HERE. It’s a great one – with wonderful ideas of how to update a condo and make it special. Kara put down wood floors and used slipcovers mixed with French chairs and linens. She also used a capital (another one!) for the coffee table. Love it. I also love the large station clock and the herbiers in the entry hall. Also, in the mirror, you can see the antique door from
Chateau Dominque which was installed to add interest to the master bedroom. What a cute idea!
In the master bedroom – she replaced a clunky closet door with a graceful and romantic linen drape. And, by adding a chandelier, it adds so much atmosphere. I just love this apartment and all the great ideas Kara had. Read the entire store HERE.
To visit Kara Childress Inc. Interior Design’s web site – go HERE.
AND, finally to order Leslie Sinclair’s design book SEGRETO, where many of Kara Childress’ projects are shown, go HERE.

OH my, what breathtaking photographs! The beautiful decor just is mind boggling, each room is just stunning!
ReplyDeleteKara is simply one of the best!!! It has been so much fun working with her on finishes!!!! Each home is just as beautiful as the last!! Beautiful post!! xo Leslie

ReplyDeleteThank you Joni for such an inspirational post. Living in Houston, we all know Kara's husband, Ray. And over the years, Kara's stunning design work has continued to impress me, not to mention provide a peek into how the other half lives !! Beautiful pictures of beautiful and thoughtful work. I love how the antiques are used - just gorgeous. I can only imagine the fun Kara and the owners had sourcing all those !
ReplyDeleteBeth
"Meh"? Really?!?! Anyway, breathtakingly beautiful post. I could've spent an hour taking in the gorgeousness -- and getting ideas. The tapestry over the TV is a brilliant idea and one that I'm going to use. Such a stunning post, Joni, as always. ox Marilyn in Mt. Vernon, VA
ReplyDeleteYes, really. This faux Chateaux in Texas thing is tired, I don't care how much money you throw at it.
DeleteI can't help but agree on this one as well. The chateaux in Texas style has long passed its peak. While the pictures are lovely, a careful look reveals the same look we have been seeing out of Houston designers for the past five years or longer. There must be a reason. Either they copy each other's work, attend the same design school or it's the clients who cannot risk being different from their friends and neighbors. This is just more of the same old same old we have seen here before. This is not to suggest that the designer is not executing well except for the obvious repetitive elements that always seem to show up in Houston, but it's just so predictable.
DeletePeople are playing safe - nobody seems to want a printed or woven fabric with constrast or saturated color. When is the last time you've seen anything upholstered in dark or even deep medium tones: muted, muted....BORING! The customer can't think outside the box.....and neither can the designer, or else they're obliged to go along.
DeleteNo No No No - nobody chooses a style because it is "safe" or because "they are not able to think outside the box" or because they don't dare to go for bold colors or prints. They choose it because they love the style, because it is something that resonates with their personality and inner truth, because it is something close to their heart. When these are your reasons behind your choices magic happens - your home starts to support you. It will reflect who you are and therefore reinforce it. (These energies are very subtle, but they have power.) You become more you. It means you have more integrity and that makes you more balanced.
DeleteThese gorgeous rooms here reflect softness and a romantic point of view, interest in history and hunger for not so contemporary elegance. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not for everybody. This style is a classic though... It has stood the test of time. There are elements in it that were first used in medieval times.
Just because you don't like the style, doesn't mean that the room is poorly designed. We are so used to judge everything on a very personal level - "hate it" or "love it", but actually it is possible to judge a piece of art objectively. These rooms are luscious and very well designed, because there is harmony. Each room comes together as a harmonious whole, because there is balance, everything in the rooms is in the right scale, all the proportions are right, there are beautiful lines in the room, rhythm is created, there is emphasis and there is contrast. Color, pattern, texture and light - all the elements are there. If the designer has the gift of imagination along with the skill and talent to master these principles the result will be a masterpiece regardless of the specific style of the space. If she worked for you, you would have all your favorite bold colors and gorgeous prints and it will come out probably more beautiful than you ever imagined.
Your room doesn't start with designers vision, designers vision starts with your taste.
Love and light,
E.
Her rooms are so light, delicate and beautiful they look like could sprout wings and fly. I think I could be very happy there. : - )
ReplyDelete.....I agree, there's a lovely lightness about these rooms yet they are really big spaces to fill. It's a real skill to keep them coherent and make them feel 'furnished' often with quite large pieces, yet wondrously as you say, these rooms could take flight.
DeleteShe just keeps "coming up" with these wonderful ideas...that's a designer!! Wonderful photos for thought! franki
ReplyDeletelove that kitchen in the second home! so cozy!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful home and post Joni. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Joni
ReplyDeleteStunning + that tapestry hiding the TV is brilliant + grand post. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com.
ReplyDeleteLovely!! Formal dining rooms are so rare these days. We are just now getting ready to break ground on our home and I have so much respect for your field.. (My Mother was also an interior designer). I am having to make so many choices - it is mind boggeling.. I am praying my way through it all! ...and to make matters worse - my taste is not what is fashionable.. so finding what i love has not been easy!!
ReplyDeleteJoni, love this beautiful post . . . great work as always!!!
ReplyDeleteLove love LOVE!! Eye candy-gasm!!...Sorry I need to collect myself *winks* Cara is such a talented designer! And I'm sorry to anon, but this light classic look will NEVER go out of style..
ReplyDeleteJoni on a separate note I think you might have spelled Cara's name wrong at the top of the page second paragraph... *winks* Vanna
And you spelled Kara wrong. *winks*
DeleteYou are right, the "light classic look" will never go out of style. The comment was about the "faux chateaux in Texas" look. There is definitely a difference.
DeleteThanks anon 2;00! You're so right! Lol!
DeleteAnd anon 2;23 I'll always love the faux chateau in Texas look too *winks*
It would be a soothing nursing home for wealthy old people who are easily addled.
ReplyDeletePlease don't be anonymous when you are this funny. Thank you for the laughter !! No matter if I like the rooms or not. XO T
DeleteI love all the textures in the kitchen. Gorgeous. And such luscious fabrics!
ReplyDeleteHi Joni, Another beautiful post! I have an unrelated question, I saw you featured in A Day in the Life on High-Heeled Foot in the Door and loved your backyard and was wondering if you could tell me the name of the paint color of your exterior trim? Is it Feathered Grey? My home is mostly pale pink, grey and tan colored brick. The neighbor kids call it the "pink house" ugh! For years I wanted a cream white house with black shutters but as I slowly repaint my interior in cream and grays I am starting to embrace my exterior brick. However the current exterior trim is cream with dark grey painted shutters it is very dated and hodge podge looking. I think repainting all the trim, doors and shutters in your exterior color you have might be a solution. Did you use it on shutters as well? Thank you in advance for reading this.
ReplyDeleteyes - the trim is feathered gray. it's a warm gray - i used it inside too!!
DeleteThese are such beautiful images. Years ago, I found your blog and Leslie Sinclair's book all from a pin on Pinterest of the wonderful kitchen with the antique terra cotta floors. I have literally studied her book every since it entered my home. Both you and Leslie have helped educate me on home design and have totally inspired me with every post and photograph. I can't wait for her new book!
ReplyDeleteI want to tell you all that The Visual Vamp - Valorie Hart - lost her beloved husband Alberto Paz yesterday. He passed away while doing what he loved best - teaching a tango dance lesson. Everyone that met Alberto loved him and only had the kindest words to say of him. My heart goes out to Valorie.
ReplyDeleteSo sad to hear it!! Condolences, Valorie!
DeleteShe is asking her blog readers to give cash donations for the funeral expenses.
DeleteShe postponed the funeral. Maybe she will have time to collect more cash to pay the mortician.
DeleteYou people are just vile.
DeleteBeautiful post and a very thoughtful comment about Valorie Hart and her husband. So kind. E.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous post! I so enjoyed pouring over the pictures...one prettier than the next love the weathered beams in that gorgeous living room!
ReplyDeleteStunning! I'm in love with that living room with the weathered beams as well! Any idea on sourcing the fabric on those sofas...pale blue/aqua, cream pattern? LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting AD photography compared to another professional's work. Made me realize the House & Garden photography ca 1980's was more like the latter you showed. The AD photography seemed a bit 'crime scene-ish' upon request from the editors.
ReplyDeleteRemember the photography of the original years with Smith/Hawken catalogues? Oh my, fabulous.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
I think Kara has hit the mark on most of these rooms, and I like her sparing use of accessories. The exception would be the "confit pots" on the living room mantle of the scalloped valence room. While great in the kitchen, these pots are too clunky/rustic for the refined living room. Likewise, the trumeau in this room (more farm than French) and the iron-gate-base demi-lune tables in the dining room that precedes it. More "flea market" than "antique", they cheapen the overall look. The faux bois bathroom console is interesting, but mismatched with the elegant papered walls and dentil moulding.
ReplyDeleteAlmost everything in these pictures qualify as flea market. The only really elegant room is the "music room". The upholstered pieces are nice, but the rest of it looks like Craig's list redux.
DeleteYour home is so FABULOUS!! Articles like yours are exactly why I subscribe!! I must admit I've gone a little topiary crazy lately. Hope I'm able to prune as well as you.An Extensive Glamorous Apartment Adorned with Dark Furniture and Wooden Ambience
ReplyDeleteJoni, my pal, I am sorry to say that I think an awful lot of the recent posts are way too "grand," sometimes to the point of "piss elegant." I like interior fantasy as much as the next woman, but I can'd imagine people LIVING in an awful lot of the recent houses. I really like your own house which is wonderful and real. I don't know what the real balance is, but I do know that we are out of balance recently.
ReplyDeleteJoni:
DeleteI like all of the homes you show ----overdone or not. The more you can show us even the ones we could not imagine living in ourselves--the more we have to see to consider what to pick and choose from to pare down for our own style. I sort of put it in the same category as I would Christmas presents--- My children learned very early to always ask for twice as much as they wanted for Christmas because they also learned very early that they were only going to get half of what they asked for. In all of my shopping travels no matter where I am--- there could be a warehouse full of whatever--- furniture---paintings--- anything and i will always ask the owner--- "Is this all your have"?? I want to see it all before I buy because even if I don't particularly like what I see it will most of the time inspire me to dream up a design or come up with some idea as a result of what I have seen. So Joni please keep showing the great stuff -- I even liked the post on Howard Slatkin's apartment -- you have no idea how many great ideas I got from that post in the way of architectural design and fabrics and painting with gold leaf ---tons of great ideas that even when over done can help me re- create a look that is not over done.
Thanks Joni for all your work
Susan
"Piss Elegant" - now that's a new genre in decorating. How could I have missed that one. I suppose if you don't like grand style schemes being shown here, you could skip over to Mrs. Borings and get yourself worked up over a 3"x5" photo of a piece of wallpaper guaranteed to make you weak in the knees.
DeleteI love the use of candles too! So pretty!
