COTE DE TEXAS: Darling French Apartment for Rent

Darling French Apartment for Rent

We usually spend a month each summer in South Padre Island.  No, it’s not fancy – at all, it’s totally laid-back and we have lots of fun with good friends from college.  I’ve been going to South Padre for most of my life and haven’t missed many summers there.  I think Ben and I have missed only two or three summers that I can remember, due to weather usually.  But this summer with my daughter getting ready to leave for college, we thought we should stay closer to home.    So, here we are in Galveston Texas, with all the beautiful old Live Oak trees cut down from Hurricane Ike.  It looks like a different island now – so bare!   At least we were able to rent a really beautiful condo in a brand new building that we got for a steal.  I keep waiting for them to tell me they quoted us the wrong price.  Shhh!   The brand new condo is actually nicer than my house with limestone floors, granite kitchens and bathrooms and frameless shower stalls – luxuries I am not used to!    Being just 50 miles from Houston, Ben can commute to and from work with ease and Elisabeth has been bringing friends down.   But, the beaches are really quiet here and it’s just not “home” like South Padre is.    It’s hotter here than there for some reason, even the water is much warmer than SPI which can be cold sometimes!    It’s been really relaxing and peaceful and I’m trying to catch up on all my old emails.    Which leads me to my point.    While I’m in Galveston – trying to pretend it’s South Padre where I pretend it’s the South of France, I get this email from a reader about a rental apartment in Paris.  Oh My God!  Why do people want to torment me?   Just when I’m thinking how thankful I am to vacation on Galveston Island, I have to see THIS apartment in Paris??????

image The Paris rental apartment is owned and was decorated by an interior designer.  Look how she dressed the santos in a cute burlap skirt.

The Paris apartment, located in an historic building in one of the better areas, the Place des Vosges, was totally redone this past year, decorated all in painted woods and creamy upholstery.  It looks like a showroom for Blanc d’Ivoire.  Of course it is owned by an interior decorator and it shows.   So many of the rentals in France are just not nearly this cute.   It’s been totally updated and even has a flat screen.   All I can think of is why am I in Galveston when I could be HERE???????

image

The main living room features restored hardwood floors and a beamed ceiling.   There are two sitting areas along with a zinc topped dining table surrounded by painted French chairs.  Too cute!!!  Notice the child’s dining chair on the far right.

image

The main living area again with a painted antique daybed that faces the fireplace.    Besides a flat screen TV with satellite, there is wireless internet, a safe, and an ice machine.  The kitchen is through the opening in the center.

image Vignette across from the dining room table.  I love the old station clock.  You can really tell an interior designer owns this apartment, it’s styled within an inch of its life!

image

The kitchen has been totally redone and has a charming window which overlooks an interior courtyard.   There is even a washing machine in this compact kitchen.  The master bedroom is through the door, and the second bedroom is reached through the master bedroom.  All these rooms surround an indoor courtyard.

image The painted dresser in the kitchen holds all the plates and mugs.

image One of the bathrooms which overlooks the courtyard has been designed with the same elements as the kitchen for visual cohesiveness.

image The master bedroom has a pretty antique iron bed.    I love the blue walls and embroidered bedding.  Cute lamps and a beautiful, huge mirror.

image The master bedroom and the second bedroom overlook an interior courtyard.  Notice that the shutters are actually just painted tin.

image This must be in the second bedroom – the flooring is different.   I love the plants in their burlap sacks.  The books and candlesticks are antique and this entire vignette is so romantic!!!

This Paris rental is on the second floor and has 2 bedrooms and bathrooms.  It is $2000/week during high season.  No pets and no smoking and small children not advised due to the antiques and light fabrics!!    To visit the web site, go HERE.      If you go, or if you have stayed here, please let me know how it was!!!!

  2. Oh me, Oh my! Here's what we can do....I'll drive down to Galveston in the AM, pick you up and we can board a flight to Paris later in the day. We can go halves on this beauty. Shhh....Don't tell.....It'll be our secret. :)

  5. Would you stop already - I'm too overwhelmed with boxes at the moment to appreciate the fabulousness of this. Plus it makes me want to change the entire vibe of the house we're renting and I'm not sure the house (or the budget) will support this chic of a look. Enjoy Galveston!

  7. I just read this interesting (NYT?) article which says that it is actually illegal to have weekly or monthly rentals in Paris. Owners are only allowed to rent their apts. out for at least 1 year. The authorities (all 5 of them) are starting to crack down.

  9. Painted tin shutters. Where can I get some? I have just the place. That tub is an optical illusion right? I'm not sure I could slip by to the turn on the hot water.

Love that you posted this apartment. Makes me want to jump on a plane to Paris. But to be honest, this place is just a bit too decorated for my tastes. Another cute item and I want to scream!

  18. Before I could even read your words, I was studying those painted tin shutters. That and hoping I didn't go wrong with wood instead of zinc for my table! Wink!

Be glad you're in Galveston, because if you were in Paris, you wouldn't be soaking up time with your daughter!

  22. Hi Joni!
Great Apartment.....Beautiful in every way... I have so much respect for the people designer or not that even ATTEMPT a renovation in a Paris apt. They are mostly in buildings that are centuries old, are surrounded by other apartments, and they are odd shapes..I've even seen water heaters concealed on the bathroom ceilings!!!!The designers and the workers did a great job on this one. YOU should go and stay there for a week......:) Maryanne

I love it. I don't agree with wandering light. Ya know when you love to decorate its soo hard to stop buying. It's not a mish-mosh AND if it is strickly a rental why put in high end antiques that could get stolen! It's fabulous in my opinion and i would enjoy staying there.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ooh la la...every image makes my heart skip a beat. I'll be in Paris in 2 weeks but only for 4 nights.
Enjoy the rest of your summer with your sweet girl!

  27. I'm just glad you didn't have to redecorate your summer rental to stay there! I am so happy you are not taking the month off of blogging!
    I would miss you terribly!

  28. I see what you mean about styling it to an inch of its life.
It's a shame they used new stuff instead of the incredible antiques available in Paris but I guess they're catering to tourists.
Love all the linen, ceiling and walls!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, it's illegal for property owners in Paris to rent out for less than a year. Housing is hard to come by, and the authorities want to keep space open for the "French" rather than foreign "pied-a-terre" owners or others inhabiting properties part time and renting when they're away. The authorities have indicated they're going to step up prosecution.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree its very cluttered - wouldn't want to live here fulltime, but still its sooo much cuter than a bland hotel!!! plus i have seen so many apts for rent in Paris that were not cute. at least this is really decorated. and yes, this is 2000 euros, not dollars!!! so it's a little bit more.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Makes me want to get a girlfriend (and I think I choose the one who speaks fluent French!) and go.....Such a fab-fab place!! Speaking of wonderful, tell Galveston hello for me. You know, I may be the odd-man out, but I like seeing more of the palms as well as the gorgeous architecture once hidden by those oaks. Sad they're gone, but then again I see more! I'm going to email you something that's happening in Sept. there.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would love to stay there...forget the hotel!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love it but I'm afraid the husband wouldn't since it's very feminine looking…forget it he can stay home and baby-sit the dog…. lol. A little less little stuff and it would be perfect! Love all the light and linen and that to die for center courtyard, wish there was a picture of that, perfect place to enjoy your morning espresso! Enjoy your holiday in Galveston!

  34. I'd love to spend a week there. Much more fun and interesting to be surrounded by all that decor instead of being in rental apartment furnished with someone's cast offs or a sterile hotel room.

  58. Well I tried! I'm going to Paris for four nights mid October but they were booked for this period.

I've had to go with a very inferior substitute, but plan on spending the difference in price on champagne and truffles instead.

If I ever get the chance though, I'm so completely there...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Wow! The interior design is so dramatic! I will absolutely bring my wife here on our 5th anniversary. We have never tried renting one of these short term furnished apartments. NYC, for my knowledge have many hotel apartments as blissful as this one. Because I live here in New York, I know most of the reputable short term apartment rental. New York City is a tourist spot and I usually recommend my foreign friends to stay in a hotel apartment to save some digits.
