One of my favorite sponsors is also one of my longest and most loyal sponsors – Karen Sugarman Designs. I’m totally in love with her jewelry which she designs – and I love to read about the inspiration behind her pieces, which she writes about in her blog HERE.Karen’s last blog entry was about this necklace – owned by Elizabeth Taylor, which she was inspired to recreate.Elizabeth Taylor’s necklace was made of antique ivory opera tokens from the 18th and 19th century, and was valued at $1,500 to $2,000 but was auctioned at $314,500.00!!Inspired by the token necklace, Karen designed this one and offered others for sale either like this or with individualized tokens.Recently she wrote HERE about a work in progress token necklace that she is currently making for a client – each token was hand drawn and created especially for the client. It’s a fascinating story and makes me wish I had ordered one myself. It’s just so beautiful!I especially love this necklace Karen designed – with an antique Chinese gaming counter hanging from a chain of peridot and pearls. Beautiful!Another favorite is this antique carnelian fob – love it. And I love Karen’s styling too. Her presentation is an art in itself. There is this antique Victorian peacock blue guilloche mourning locket – hanging from pearls. My absolute favorite – this antique cameo on a necklace of shells. Perfection. There are also bracelets and earrings – such as this stunning pair 0f red intaglios surrounded by pink opaline. The giveaway necklace was inspired by Karen’s love of the Quatrefoil shape. The quatrefoil is an ancient Christian symbol used in architecture – the name is derived from the Latin word for four leaves – as the Quatrefoil resembles a four leaf clover. In Christianity – the four sided shape is said to symbolize the four evangelists – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The height of the Quatrefoil’s popularity was during the Gothic and Renaissance eras – but today, the Quatrefoil is experiencing a resurgence – and it’s shape can be found everywhere. An example of a quatrefoil found in architecture. This is at the Croyland Abbey and depicts the life of St. Guthlac.A stained glass quatrefoil found in a church in Chiswick, England.
Here is an architectural example from today – the kitchen in actor Robert Pattinson’s house boasts a quatrefoil window.
This gorgeous example is from the kitchen in Velvet and Linen’s new house. There is a matching quatrefoil on the opposite side of this space in the living room.
McAlpine Tankersley designed this quatrefoil window for a house in Nashville.
And another by McAlpine Tankersley – this window lays on its side.
Suzanne Kasler designed this chair using a quatrefoil for inspiration.
Kasler also designed this line of quatrefoil lamps.
Charming shutters using the design.
Fountains in the quatrefoil shape are popular.
The quatrefoil is a very popular design in papers, in linens, and in fabrics.
You can even get the shape in tiles – in fact this is what inspired Karen Sugarman in her jewelry design – this tile is what she wanted for her master bathroom renovation – until she priced it. Stunning!
And here is the giveaway – this beautiful mother of pearl quatrefoil necklace, hanging from a chain of pearls and crystals:

Joni, I truly adore Karen's work, and were I to choose I would pick the gold bracelet with the Ivory token. A few Christmases ago, we gave my MIL a piece by Karen, and Mom loved it. Karen is not only very talented, but she is very sweet, too. I would love to win anything by her, but that bracelet is just stunning. Thanks so much to you and Karen for the opportunity to try and win something from he collection.
ReplyDeleteI have been asking everyone which songs make them cry, and I have a long list which I will try and post to you later. In the interim I thought of a movie score that reduces me to a greasy heap when I hear a certain refrain that gears up to the soaring melody, and that score belongs to "Out of Africa". The parts that always get me are the scene when they are flying over Africa in Dennis's plane and then the music for the end. I cannot hear it and remain dry-eyed. Then anything recorded by Eva Cassidy has that effect on me. What a voice! And the one guaranteed to make me cry is "Fields of Gold". I will try and post the others when I get a chance. I have had company.

So let's talk about the Chantal II earrings. Classy and edgy at the same time. The coral cameo piece is so unbelievable - especially since I just remodeled my bedroom in pink/coral, gold and white and I have hanging a beautiful frame of cameo buttons that my great aunt collected in the 1920's. Thank you for the lovely post! I would pick the Antique Angel Skin Coral Cameo with Shells - "Shell of an Idea III Necklace," for several reasons. First, because it is stunning - soft, beautiful colors and shapes, laid on in a way that manages to be both lush and delicate at the same time. Second, because the memories of wonderfaul days by the beach with my family that it evokes. And lastly, because my 10 year old daughter has gotten enthusiastically into jewelry design in the past couple of months and just asked me if she could take some of the shells we've collected at the beach and make them into jewelry. Her skills need practice but her eye is wonderful and she is so creative. I can't wait to show her Karen's website for inspiration!

I kept changing my mind about my favorite item there (and would, in truth, be happy with any piece at all), but finally settled on the Sailors Valentine necklace. I'm married to a former Navy man who used to go out to sea, and I love the idea that he would have brought it back to me. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway! ReplyDeleteHi Joni,
ReplyDeleteThanks so very much for the chance to receive one of Karen's beautiful necklaces. Thank you to Karen for donating one of her Museum quality pieces of jewelry, as well. It seems like someone recovered an old Pirate's Chest from a sunken ship and when they opened it, all of Karen's gorgeous jewelry spilled out...each one such a treasure...If I could choose just one (difficult to do!), it would be the Moonstone Necklace with the Cornelian Fob...oh, my....so lovely. Thanks Again, Diane d-westbrook@sbcglobal.net
I think I lost an hour this afternoon looking at the fantastic collection, trying to decide my favorite without looking at the prices. LOL But I think I would have to pick the Rhodium Silver Diamond Bow Raw Diamonds Keshi & Flameball Pearls Necklace - Charmaine Necklace. Now I want to go back and look up some of the other choices people have made cause they all sound fantastic.
ReplyDeleteSo many beautiful things. Thank you and Karen for your generosity. I would choose The Carved blue lace Agate Venetian Intaglio Isola Bella necklace. Soft and lovely. Thank you, Pam Shipp

So pretty and delicate looking. The story of the Opera Tokens necklace is fascinating and I loved seeing how the client customized hers. Thank you for such a lovely giveaway.

I love the Tableau group for the simple yet interesting combination of shapes and material but my favorite is the quatrefoil necklace being given away. I love pearls and gold and combine with a symbol that denotes love and unity of people of all religions and nationalities throughout history and art is something I could wear to the opera or just every day with jeans and a sweater. I would never tire of that piece. I don't see many things that I like very much but the Quatrefoil necklace appeals to me on every level.
ReplyDeleteJoan (joan@joanbroderick.com)
My favorite piece is the sapphire slices bracelet- the smooth cabochon surface allows you to wear this bracelet even with lacy sweaters as it won't catch and pull threads. It's simple and rich looking and with the gorgeous colors you cna wera it every day and it will always match what you are wearing. Love her site, have now bookmarked it as I did your blog so long ago. Thanks for tranpsorting me away from work for a few mintues every day at lunch!
