If you plan to visit Los Angeles and want to spend the night enveloped in esteemed interior designer Michael Smith luxury, Shutters Hotel on the Beach will fit the bill. Recently, Mr. Smith spearheaded a total redesign of the charming Cape Cod styled hotel, and it shows: Smith's touches are everywhere, from the checked and striped fabrics, to the luxurious bathroom fixtures to the beachfront restaurant - it's Michael, all the way. Shutters is located in Santa Monica and as it says, it's smack on the beach. The hotel takes its name from the multitude of shutters that cover the rooms' windows. If you go, be sure to visit the hotel's store. Among available items you can buy is the bedspread, made from a beautiful John Robshaw fabric! Enjoy!
Does it get anymore Michael Smith than this? A checked chair in every room. Notice the fashionable Oriental garden seat and wood floors.
The rooms feature two flat screen tvs, one in the bedroom, the other in the bathroom. I could be very happy in this bedroom.
Smith is famous for four poster beds and he doesn't disappoint here. Cute guy is available from room service.
Close up of Tibetan rug. It's available for sale in the hotel store.
The striped fabric headboard appears to me to be Rogers and Goffigon Cyclades.
Gorgeous Smith bathroom with spa tub. Notice the window from the tub to the bedroom.
I love this Hotel. It has an European resort feeling, very cozy and inviting
ReplyDeleteI love this hotel too - I visited Santa Monica last year and I stayed at the Viceroy which is just across the road - we visited Shutter 2 of the 4 nights we were there and had drinks in the beautiful lobby! It was stunning and next time I'm in LA I do hope to stay at Shutter! Thanks for posting all of the wonderful pictures of the rooms!

Hi, I just discovered your beautiful blog. There is so much great eye candy to see here, I could spend hours glued to this chair!
ReplyDeleteThe guestrooms look so homey and personal--a far cry from the usual minimalist, bland hotel decor.
ReplyDeleteWell -- another reason to buy lottery tickets! LOL! What a gorgeous place -- so utterly charming, warm and welcoming -- so unlike those cold ultra-mod places! And super ideas for anyone's home! ((and yep! that is a VERY cute guy! LOL!~))

Hi Joni!
ReplyDeleteThis definitely looks like a great place to stay! Very charming....
Joni, I've always wanted to stay at Shutters. Thanks for all the great pics! Now, I can live vicariously through your post until I actually get there ;-)
ReplyDeleteJoni,
ReplyDeleteWe stay in Santa Monica quite often as my husband is creative director of an advertising agency and he does most of his editing etc. there. I can never get him to stay at Shutters. He loves the Viceroy and the Huntley as he thinks they are more chic with the celebrity crowd - he thinks he is one !! How close are you to the hurricane? Stay out of trouble.

Thanks Joni for the fabulous photos. I have read about Shutters & always wanted to stay there. Can you imagine if it is Rogers & Goffigon fabric in a Hotel? Too Wonderful. Lots of my friends are now reading your blog! We love it!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing - I almost felt like I was on vacation. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that the rooms look homey and not hotel-y. You can definitely tell that Smith decorated these rooms :)
ReplyDeleteBook me a room! This looks like my idea of a great hotel!

Never tire of how Smith uses stripes. LOVE the Robshaw spread!
ReplyDeleteWhat bathrooms! Speaking of which, I am leaving a query on my blog for you tonight:-) Only if you have time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous post! I admit that I did not know this designer but this translates exactly my style! This hotel is like my dream house!!!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLove the hotel -love your blog. Do you know who did the striped accent pillow on the bed? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi yall! Thanks for all the comments about Michael and the Shutters, beautiful, huh?
ReplyDeleteTo Kelly: I don't know who that fabric is from , maybe Robshaw since it matches the quilt so well. It isn't familiar to me. sorry.
We stayed @ Shutters back in May, and I should have payed closer attention. I didn't realize they had remodeled it recently!
ReplyDeleteMy friend is obsessed w/ Michael Smith- esp. his designer collection for Ann Sacks- the town toilet tissue holder is a big favorite :)
If you like Shutters decor, you probably would like the Montage. I love their bathrooms!!
p.s. I finally answered your comment- sorry I was out of town. Just getting around to updating my blog a bit. Glad you love that house too!!!
i haven't seen the redesign. looks great. but i don't like the beds. i like the old beds much better. that shower? insane.
ReplyDeletethere's a hotel called the inn at the beach in hermosa. very similar vibe (i think they tried to copy shutters) much much smaller. and then, the montage, as mentioned is an ENORMOUS shutters-like place. that's in laguna beach though.
I am a HUGE Smith fan, so am shocked that this hotel escaped my radar. So thank you Ms. Joni for clueing me in.Great Post!
