Be sure to listen to the newest Skirted Roundtable when we welcome Ms. Karen Carroll, the Editor-In-Chief of my favorite design magazine of all time. I told Karen that each month my mother will call me and tell me to go look at one page or another in the new Southern Accents, or my sister will call to say what a great house is photographed this month. My late aunt, Janice Greenburg, and I would spend hours going over the new issue page by page – something I really miss doing with her. So, you can see what a big part the magazine has played in my life and being able to talk with Karen was, of course, a huge thrill for me in particular. I told Ms. Carroll that the first email Cote de Texas ever received from "national press” was from Karen herself, graciously thanking me for showcasing her magazine.
We also talked about this famous cover of a lavender bedroom, which is my personal favorite. Karen told us that this was their best-selling cover ever - and is it any wonder why? I can’t imagine a more beautiful room, anywhere. To me, this image of the French styled bedroom perfectly sums up the design aesthetic of Southern Accents and shows, in this one photograph, everything that is so fabulous about the magazine.
So, it is with great pleasure that The Skirted Roundtable presents Ms. Karen Carroll - we hope you have as much fun listening to it as we did recording it. To listen to the latest Skirted Roundtable, please go here. Enjoy!!!

Joni, it was so much fun being part of the gang this week. I can't believe you remembered the purple bedroom cover -- it's truly one of my favorites and it was a great seller (we all know you've got impeccable taste). Thanks for all your support of the magazine -- readers like you make my day. Take care, Karen
ReplyDeleteJoni, I love this cover--the simplicity and the warmth. Thanks for reminding me to bring out these aspects in the spaces around me.

ReplyDelete...and just for you because you are special..I removed the word verification from my blog. If I start getting these funky auto replies again though..it will have to go back on.

ReplyDeleteGoing over to The Skirted Roundtable to listen now...
Have thoroughly enjoyed the Skirted Roundtable events. Kudos to you!
ReplyDeleteLoved hearing Karen's beautiful Southern voice. I love Southern Accents magazine. I am a magazine junkie. A couple of years ago I had to make the heart-wrenching decision to weed out a very large amount of magazine back-issues or get divorced. Needless to say, not ONE of my copies of Southern Accents went anywhere! Carol
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I remember that cover well. Like you, I've saved that issue...and sooooo many others! A wonderful magazine. Long may it wave!!
ReplyDeleteI loved that post, talking with the woman from the trenches...
ReplyDeleteKaren is so down to earth, it's good to hear. And to the critiques, you can't please everybody and a magazine is a trail blazer of sorts, sometimes they need to make "risky" desicions, its a part of the quality of a good magazine. Being sometimes un - comfortable and a bit edgy. Even though I never found SA edgy to be critical! But I am not a regular reader and I have a little different style. But I loved their last installment of it!
Magazines after all cater to their particular readership.
In relationship to blogs I found magazines more floating above the individual level, they have a different function, different access to designers, they are more mass influential, blogs should sparkle through their individual aproach, our unique voices, we cover the under - ground so to speak and mutual influence is hopefully the lasting result.
I never see a future without the sensual joy of magazines or books in my hands!
Joni
ReplyDeleteCongrats! You are so deserving of being featured! And such a perfect magazine for your style!
