COTE DE TEXAS: The Southern Acadian House

The Southern Acadian House

image
If you are a long-time reader, you may remember when three years ago I showcased a house furnished by Houston interior designer Tami Owen of The Owen Group. The house was dubbed “The Octagon House” HERE because many of the rooms were actually octagons. The house was a stunner and for months people emailed me asking for sources. It’s funny how fitting the name of the house was – because the octomom’s babies were born just a few weeks prior to the opening of the showhouse! Over the years, Tami has done more showhouses and continued designing for clients. She is extremely talented and very hard working and it shows in all the details she puts into her houses.
Today, I am thrilled to have gorgeous, professionally taken photographs from Tami’s latest endeavor. This house brings together the team Robert Dame of Robert Dame Designs and Brian Thompson, of Thompson Custom Homes. Tami was involved in the project from the very beginning. The house was built using elements with patina to give it a timeless feel. The exterior was based on the traditional Southern Acadian House, from Louisiana. The house has sold, so after the showcase, the furniture that wasn’t bought was moved out. But before that happened, Tami hired a photographer to capture the beauty of the architecture and furnishings. Enjoy!

image
You call tell the house is special just be the stone driveway. A row of French doors open onto the long porch, reached by brick stairs and iron railings. There is a mixture of stucco and wood on the exterior. Notice the charming brick fence with a little gate on the far left that leads to a courtyard.  There is a another courtyard and gate on the right side.

image
And looking straight on at the house – notice the row of tiles that highlight the roof’s lines.  And on the right, notice the darling little windows with their own tiny shutters that flank the door in the courtyard.

image
Here, at sunset, you can see the gate to the courtyard that leads to the kitchen.  Notice the tiny window with its French inspired shutter – so cute!  The little window is where one of the powder rooms is located.   And notice the lantern above the door.   Inside, the row of small windows open to the computer room.

image
Inside the brick courtyard, tiny steps lead up to the door.  Before the half wall is a fountain:

image
Close up of the tiny fountain.

image
The front door is the center door on the long porch.  Further on, is the courtyard on the left side house that leads to the family room and billiards room.

 image
Upon entering the front door, a parquet basket weave pattern floor leads down the center aisle.  To the left is the study and to the right is the dining room.  Straight ahead is the living room that opens up to the backyard.  All art work in the house is by Michelle Y. Williams Gallery.  Rugs are from Creative Flooring.  Most lighting fixtures are from Brown.  The flooring is 150 year old reclaimed flooring from Custom Flooring in Houston.  The wall color is Sherwin Williams Ermine and the doors and windows are Sherwin Williams Anonymous.

image
The study’s shelves were accessorized by Tami – I love the way she chooses and displays her accessories.

image
All the curtains were designed by Tami and made by Custom Creations HERE.  Custom Creations also provided almost all the furniture found in the house.  These curtains – with trim down the leading edge, match the ones found in the dining room across the hall.

image
Close up of her shelves.  Love it!

image
The dining room faces the front porch.  The table was made by Custom Flooring out of the same flooring found throughout the house.  The rug has just a hint of blue to match the antique cabinet from Joyce Horn Antiques.

image
Looking the other way – the room connects to the butler’s pantry.  Love the two lanterns.

image
Close up of the Joyce Horn chest and mirror.  Walls downstairs are Venetian Plaster.

I borrowed this picture from Love Where You Live so you could see the curtains with the beautiful tassel trim.  I love the French doors with the bottom panels made of bead board.

image
The butler’s pantry leads from the dining room into the kitchen.

image
The front door leads straight back to the living room, which overlooks the back yard.  One side of the living room has a large stone fireplace where four club chairs surround a mirrored table.

image
The beamed living room is divided into two areas, one around the two sofas and the other around the fireplace.  Past the fireplace is the kitchen.  The same French doors found in the front of the house are found here too, looking onto the back yard and swimming pool.

image
And looking the other direction – past the living room is the family room and billiards room and bar.  The flooring in that area is brick, which you can see here in this picture.  Notice the gorgeous wood plank floors found in the living room.  There are 150 years old reclaimed.
The architecture of the house is so pretty – it really shines in the back half of the house where the rooms are in an enfilade, opening off each other without the use of hallways.    You can see from one end of the house to the other:  from the family room on the left side, past the stair hall, past the living room, breakfast room and through to the kitchen on the far right of the house.   Outside, a long covered porch connects all these rooms together.  With Tami choosing only two paint colors – the rooms all blend together – creating a cohesive design. The choice of the muted area rugs is another element that creates the serene look Tami was after.  And of course, the lack of bold patterns also helps to create the quiet interiors, which allows the architecture to take center stage.  My favorite part of the house is it is casually elegant.  No rooms scream “off limits” – it is all welcoming and invites you to lounge in the living room as much as the family room.

image
On the other side of the living room fireplace is a small fireplace in the breakfast room and kitchen area.   The lighting in the kitchen and breakfast room is from AREA (713) 668-1668.

imageLooking the other direction at the kitchen with its Calacutta Ora marble counters and backsplash.

image
The kitchen over looks the covered patio outside with its fireplace and outdoor kitchen.

 image
The island top was custom made using the same wood as the flooring.  Bar stools by Custom Creations.

image
The marble is so beautiful – love the slabs used for the backsplash.

image
And facing the front right courtyard is the computer room with its herringbone pattern brick floor.

image
And, off the courtyard door on the right side by the kitchen is this powder room with its old marble vessel on a custom iron base.

image
Walking over to the other side of the house – on the left, past the living room, is the stair hall – with the bar that stands across from it.  Past the stairs and the bar is the family room and billiards room.  You can see the living room here.

image
Across from the bar is the stairhall with its wood treads and brick floor.

image
And underneath the stairs, off a door that leads to the back yard is this powder room, with its marble sink on a concrete counter.  This counter and the bar’s counter and various other concrete work was created by Gunnells Concrete

image
Across from the stairs is the wet bar that faces the front porch.  Again, with concrete counters by Gunnells.

image

The wet bar with the wine refrigerator and flatscreen tv.

image
Past the stairs and the bar is the billiards room with a game table that overlooks the front left courtyard.  The plank wood ceiling is painted the same color as the French doors found throughout.

image
Cute slipped chairs surround a game table that overlooks the front courtyard.

image
And, past the bar and stairhall is the family room with its ginormous flatscreen!  Wow!  That has to be the biggest TV I’ve ever seen.  Ben would NEVER leave this room if we had a TV like this.   Fabric covered doors hide the speakers and woofers.

image
The serene family room over looks the backyard and the side of the house.  I love the slightly darker trim on the chairs’ hem.  I love the wall hanging lanterns.

image
All the bedrooms are upstairs.  Cute bench.  I think  these long benches are a great idea for a hallway.  The laundry room is to the right of the prints.

image
This bedroom has wall to wall seagrass (as do all the bedrooms besides the master.)  Cute tufted chair.  Love the headboard and skirted tables.

image
Closeup of the skirted tables – oval pleats with x detailing.  Great headboard by Custom Creations!

image
This bedroom overlooks the front of the house – its windows are front and center.

image
Closeup of the trendy burlap styled headboards and Swedish chest.

image
This bedroom was finished in golds and creams. Darling lantern and tiny windows.

image
One of the bathrooms – love the wall hanging faucet.  Notice the doors – these are found throughout.

image
Another bathroom with white marble and wood vanity.

image
Upstairs vignette leading to the bedrooms.  Love the way Tami accessorizes.  Such pretty rugs too!

image
The master bedroom is found through double doors.  The high, vaulted ceiling has a chandelier and a fireplace.  This room overlooks the back yard.

The headboard is white tufted, flanked by light painted chests.

image
All bedding in the house came from Kuhl Linscomb.

image
Close up of the wood framed tufted headboard with its tiny nailheads.  So cute!

The woman’s master bath with its marble tub and crystal chandelier.

image
Cute fabric covered vanity.

image
The man’s bath is more masculine with darker woods.

Night time view of the back yard

image
Here, the living room is in the middle of the house.  To the left is the kitchen and to the right is the stair case and family room.  Above in the center is the master bedroom.

image
View of the swimming pool with its fountains.

 image
Off the kitchen is the sitting area around the fireplace.  The outdoor kitchen is right under the windows.

image
The outdoor kitchen sits right outside the kitchen window.  Slate floors.

image
And the fireplace – with its flatscreen above it!  The architecture of the porch is so pretty with its vaulted ceiling and slate and brick floors.

Whew.  I’m exhausted just writing this!  I can’t imagine how HARD Tami Owen worked on this house with the builder Thompson Custom Homes and the designer Robert Dame.  This project was HUGE.  It must have taken over at least a year to get it all together – and then to install it.  It’s a shame it was only open for a few weeks!!   The house sold so as soon as the show was over, it all had to be taken down.  Can’t imagine the effort it all took.  Tami is incredible.  Her eye for detail and just her zest for her job is amazing.  To contact Tami Owen, go HERE.  And to read more about this house go to the blog Love Where You Live – Susan interviewed Tami and she has more details and pictures HERE.

A HUGE thank you to Tami Owens for letting me use her photographs of this amazing house.

    2. If you've ever visited any Parade of Homes, spec homes are always designed to appeal to many people, without personalization. This one has the bones to be stunning no matter who is putting furniture in it; absolutely gorgeous.

    3. God, y'all - this house is gorgeous. gorgeous. come on. don't be critical just to be critical. those doors - those porches - the walls - i think its beautiful. i would love to live here!

    4. No Joni, I really tried to like it, as I do many of these new houses you post. But often I just feel repulsed and then I try to figure out why. In this case I think it's just that they've taken a long checklist of what's "classy" and put it all together whether it makes sense to or not and then filled it with the most bland and hideous furniture. This house is going to be so dated in 10 years, it already screams "2008" to me even though it attempts to reference classical architecture. I'm all for spending money if you have it but this is not how I'd do that.
And can I just ask, are there others who feel that dressing those beds in that puffy, flouffy, marshmellow style is just way too OTT? What is that supposed to be - french-style? This is an honest question.
Anyway Joni, Nope. Not feeling it. Would I take it? I don't know. I'd likely not. But, as always, I enjoyed reading your post and I love your blog.

    5. "I would love to live here" - Joni, you say that about every house you publish. It can't always be true. I hope a first class designer takes this house empty and redesigns the spaces into something lovely. What Tami has done here every reader you have could do with blinders on.

    6. I think this house is beautiful but sterile. It is a staged home, not a lived in home - so that's to be expected. Just wish there were a few books on each nightstand, a few candles here and there, etc.

Joni, as always, thanks for showing us!

    7. So I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I was thinking that maybe it was just my mood or something but it does seem VERY flat. No color, no where for my eyes to go to. I don't see anything that really makes the rooms appeal to me. It all looks so so so bland! All I can see is gray, white, and tan with crusty looking furniture. The wood floors are ok to look at but there are groves all in them. They don't look safe at all or very easy to keep clean.

I'm not saying this just to be critical. There are many houses you have shown that I LOVE! This just isn't one of them and I think it's mainly the furnishings that I don't like. The beds were nothing but UGLY! The chairs all throughout the home were not attractive at all either. I do think someone else could redecorate the home and it would look much better.

Beautiful architecture with some very charming details. However, the interior was so cold as ice. I think Joni does a better job with this look. All that white and gray needs an infusion of gold and crystal to warm it up.

    1. Wow!I totally agree. When there is that much nuetral you need something to add life and excitement. I love to have elements of glam, via gilded mirrors, chandys, a tad of pattern, a pop of color. Its a great foundation, but unfinished. Mela

  10. If it's possible to over dose on white one's best chance would be in this house. I can believe that Tami worked hard in filling the house with furniture, but clearly did not work hard from a design point of view. It looks like a thoughtless attempt to fill a very large home with properly scaled furniture and as many finishes as there are artisans to do them often with poor results. The bathroom with the ugly stained vanity sitting on a beautiful marble floor is a case in point. What was Tami thinking? The answer: She wasn't. She came across on this project as having a big budget but no real interest in delivering a quality product. Please don't come back to defend her glorious Houston reputation. That all may be true, but this house is a "stinker". It looks like an 18 wheeler drove up, delivered furniture and called it a day.

    2. I never cease to be horrified by comments like the one above. Can't you just say that it doesn't suit your taste, seems bland or cold or whatever words fit for you....without using insulting comments about the house being a "stinker"?! Good manners are always in style, never trendy..... to be abandoned at any opportunity.

      Delete
    3. The word "stinker" appeared in an earlier posts by Joni in which SHE referred to a room Bunny Williams did in the Kips Bay Showhouse as a "stinker". I simply repeated a description which I felt was appropriate given Joni suggested that all designers have one once in a while.

As to my trailer, Renee. Grow up. If I submitted pictures of my home to you or anyone else on this blog, it would be considered a "jaw dropper". We are discussing this house today, not yours (God forbid) nor mine.

    4. Renee, maybe you would have an up tick in your own business ventures if you got off your hind parts and did something fresh and new occasionally. I don't see people beating a path to your door in So. Florida. So much for trailers. Perhaps you should hitch yours to your delivery van and high tail it to Texas. Joni may be able to give you some of her cast off clients. I few of them may be redoing their dog houses.

    8. Very original comment Renee. In fact, it's about as original as your outdated designs. I especially liked the bathroom you designed with trumpets on the ceiling.(I have to admit I'm still laughing about that little gem) Oh, and to top it off you added Louis Armstrong music that played when the bathroom door was opened! LMAO! Maybe your next bathroom design could feature Chubby Checker music every time the toilet is flushed? You go girl!

      Delete
    9. Anon. 7:39 Wow, how could we forget the trumpeting bathroom. One of Renee's highest achievements. I'm with you, Chubby Checker would be a hoot for sure with perhaps a little James Brown's "I Feel Good" thrown in at the end of one's visit.

Joni, I've seen Renee's work. I am not fond of flamingos.

    10. Bridge, it's spelled CATTY, not CADDY. CADDY carries your golf clubs or holds your loose tea. It appears from the sequence that you should be addressing Renee Finberg who needs to see images of one's home before accepting their opinion. The fact that she assumes that anyone who doesn't agree with her must live in a trailer when her region is full of them is laughable.

I have a real problem with cowardice.

Thank you Joni for your support.

      Delete
    12. And I, Renee, have a real problem with wanna be designers who think that no one walking the planet has a valid opinion unless it's theirs. Now go attend your flamingos and decorate a couple of powder rooms using your favorite "horn blowers" since that seems to be the epitome of your talent. Thank you for your support Anon. 9:39. Some design posts are not soon forgotten. The horn blower powder room has to be a blogging first - perhaps also a "last".

Please, as a southern girl who was raised with manners by a grandmother who told me, "If you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all!" This house is STELLAR and for those negative people who might not know the meaning of that word it means, exceptionally good; outstanding. All I can say is learn a little southern etiquette and maybe learn to decorate from other people who know something about the subject.

  14. Hi Joni,

  16. The architecture is beautiful; the reclaimed floors, the calacatta marble in kitchens and baths, the antique sink in the powder room, the lighting, the paint colors are all lovely. I find the pale colors very restful and calm, but in my own home I prefer a bit more color...not a lot, but a bit more. Of course, that can be achieved with personal collections, etc. I assume the home in its pre-sale state is trying to appeal to the majority of people. I appreciate the project because they used unusual materials, many injecting the patina of age, and I liked their attention to details. One small item I liked was the use of rain chains instead of down spouts from their beautiful copper gutters. Imagine what a distraction down spouts would have made. Thanks for sharing this home with us, Joni, and providing so much information. Another master class!

  17. The interior is lovely though a tad bland. But the architecture..! I lived in Lafayette LA. for 15 years. I would recognize the origins of this design anywhere. An amazing architect, A. Hays Town, spearheaded a renaissance in quality design, after years of post-WWII bad building. In the words of another architect I hold in great esteem, Andres Duany," His buildings have been so livable, such a good fit with the climate, the landscape, the materials, and the workmanship of the region." Most of the finest residential work, with this look, must give its nod to the influence of A. Hays Town. You had several comments on a recent post related to builders building without quality design. This is the antithesis.
Thank you for reminding me of the traditional architecture of a region that refuses to get lost in generica.

  18. Lovely house, but I cannot help thinking that all the images look like they were purposely drained of color, it is so anemically pale. I love monochrome, but does anyone else think we may have all fallen over the edge here? A shot of green, perhaps, a touch of yellow, something.... Even a healthier dose of deep darks would help.

  19. I so love everything about this house. I am really loving the Acadian architecture more and more. I should, it's the look of my childhood and family roots. My own home is southern French/New Orleans so I can relate to this look. Thanks so much Joni for showing us this. I love how you always include the resources for what we see. That is priceless information, I can't thank you enough. This home is just gorgeous. While the bones of the house are rooted in time, I love the current styling, it makes the house interesting. 20. The house had such an easy flow to it. I love how all the different elements worked so effortlessly together -- the concrete, marble, brick, reclaimed plank flooring. The house really showed the excellent results when the builder, designer, and interior designer work together -- no oddly placed windows and doors, for example. Thanks once again, Joni.

  22. Thank you for sharing this house with us Joni! I think all of the individual finishes are beautiful and the architecture is outstanding. I do however agree with some of the other commenters that it looks somewhat flat or cold in these photos. I am not sure if it is the photography or the lack of any personal effects. It just looks too staged and impersonal but then again, I am not a designer so maybe that is the goal for the occasion??? I loved seeing it and even pinned a few photos. I adore the stools in the kitchen and the dining table in the kitchen as well.

When I compared them to the ones Love Where You Live - I decided that they didn't reflect the true look of the house - it was very golden. So I photoshopped the colors - turned it more white. this may make it look a little off. compare my photos in the dining room with susan's one photograph i added - hers do look better than the ones i was given.

The color of the back of the shelves looks as though it may also be Anonymous, but I can't be sure. And the trim of the shelves looks to be a distressed finish. 30. Where do I begin....perfection. I held my breath as I scrolled through...love. The architecture is incredible. I am impressed with the scale of the rooms as being manageable yet cozy - the rooms breathe. Details from floorings to moldings to doors is appealing visually and all details beckons one's touch. This house is suitable to a young family as well as the empty nesters whose extended family visits for holidays and or more. I LOVE THIS HOUSE. The yard is manageable and the pool is just right in scale again. The neutral decor politely embellishes each and every room without selfishly drawing attention away from the homes personality- a perfect marriage of architecture and interior design- thoughtfullness from every sconce to the (plaster walls) from every rug complimenting every floor it covers. I am so impressed by the TALENT of the architects, builder, interior designer, landscaper, etc. I am MOST appreciative to you Joni for sharing and for the opportunity you provide for me to learn THANK YOU- again an awe inspiring post.

  34. hi! havent commented in awhile and honestly have about ten of your posts in my google reader ;) been a little busy having babies and such but happy to be taking a tiny step back in to my blogging world. love the exterior of this house! and much of the interior...my only complaint is that every single can light was turned on in every room photographed! ugh...as a designer and a lover of photography i just thought it was so distracting and looked all wrong. took away from what could be and IS so simply beautiful. reminded me of a builder-home website? i hate even saying it. anyway, as always your blog is wonderful and i have a lot of catching up to do!
also, you asked me awhile back to submit a kitchen i did for a client for your readers homes series and i have every intention of doing so...so flattered you asked me to. again, just now getting back to the land of the living! ha! :)
    happy blogging

  35. I love Tami's show homes. Some of your readers obviously don't realise that the decor is neutral because the houses are staged to be sold. What a fantasy dream job although I can see it would also be hard work and stressful.

I get lots ideas and inspiration from these homes - sometimes I even imagine what it might be like to have the sort of money needed to buy one of them lock stock and barrel. I mean, imagine walking into this house knowing that you can afford to buy the lot if you really want to?

  36. Charlotte Des FleursMay 6, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Maybe that is how "Show Homes" are done in Texas, but not in California. When staged for sale, the colors are much warmer. There are towels in the bathrooms, toys in the bedrooms and flowers, plants and fruits. No doubt, we have to work harder to sell a house in California. Yes, this house was staged to sell but I think it was also staged to show off the "latest" trends in decorating. Not saying that is bad, but a show house does not have to be so cold and impersonal. AND, since this was such an expensive house, I would have added two or three times as many beams in the ceilings or made them twice as thick. Perhaps it was the angle of the lens, but the space between the beams looked much too wide. If those beams had served a true architectural purpose, they could not have supported the weight of the upper floor.

  37. Honestly, after years of color and pattern that my eyes have tired of, this neutral and calming palette
is exactly what I'm in the mood for. Light colored fabrics have improved in durability and staining factor. If color is wanted, there are plenty of ways to include it with flowers, pillows and accessories. I think the house is divine!

  38. Lovely house and details. I, too, had the impression that the house was a little "cold" until I realized ... it's the photographs. There is a "muddy" cast on many of them, particularly the upstairs, back rooms, and rooms such as bathrooms with little natural light. For example, look at the photos for the family room, kitchen close-ups, and living room. Each of these rooms has two photos, taken from different directions. One of each of these pairs is so much brighter, cleaner, and warmer than the other. The brighter/cleaner/warmer photo is probably the true color. See also the French ceramic jars on the study's shelves. We all know that they're a bright mustard yellow (like the photo shot from the entry), not the dull color in the close-ups. I think Tami should ask the photographer to adjust the color cast in Photoshop. It'd make a world of difference as to how viewers perceive the "feeling" of the rooms.

  39. The house is stunning in its design and decor, however, I am not a fan of large homes. I think they resemble a gas guzzling suburban and squander valuable resources like heating/cooling and electricity, and you make no mention if this house is built using resource saving technology such as geothermal or solar. While I think it's interesting to see new trends in decorating, how a house is built should be showcased as well. I hope that someday using the most recent resource saving technology becomes just as important to build a house as the type of burlap used to cover a headboard, or linen to encase the master bed, or the swedish sideboard placed in the dining room. Granted I know that is not the focus of your post but I feel compelled to comment on the continued building of such large homes that waste our valuable resources and astonished no one comments on the size of them.

    1. Bridge - In the past I have commented about the larger homes needing more upkeep than the smaller ones both inside and out.

While it's great to imagine living in a large, sprawling home, the reality is you need
help to maintain it. My home is 4,000 sq ft and I have to have inside help every other week.
      And outside help every week.
With a home of larger than $4,000 sq ft I 'd guess you'd need weekly help or maybe help more often.

I think there are MANY VERY LOVELY things about this particular home.

Hi Jonie - just so you know...I subscribe to many blogs (too many, truth be told) and I've developed a systems whereby I scroll through fairly quickly, reading what catches my interest and deleting as I go. But guess what? Yours is the exception. I set yours aside to read later, in a quiet-time moment, knowing that it will transport me to a wee bit of lovely, just me and Cote de Texas. 41. I think it's a beautiful home and would gladly call it mine if given the chance. Those floors are gorgeous and I love the sink in the powder room. The kitchen beautiful and functional and I really love the carpets and artwork throughout, I have got to go see more of that artwork! I am wondering why people don't seem to realize that this home was staged hence the reason it lacks some of the warmth from people and personal belongings. While the wall color choices might not be everyone's taste the colors are perfect to get a house sold, love the finish on them. I think a lot of people missed the point of this post, look at the architecture, look at the details throughout stop fussing about wall color and furnishings when nobody actually lives there yet. I think Tami did a fabulous staging job, not a design job.

    Hugs Joni!

As such, people have every right to comment on both, regardless of whether it's for the purposes of staging or not, it's still not appealing to some. Please don't assume that we non-blogging masses are not aware of the obvious.

  42. Anon. 5:08, I don't disagree that information regarding the resource saving technology may have been an interesting feature in the commentary on this house if one is in the market to build or renovate, but just because a house is large does not mean it guzzles energy. A few years ago, I built a very large home, probably the overall size of this one. It happens to be all electric. The energy costs is less than the house I left which is half its size. We had a HVAC design company recommended by our local power company design the heating and cooling system and then it was installed to spec by people who understood the theory behind the system. The overall affect was that our energy costs was reduced by 50% for a house that was approximately twice the size of the former home. People make a serious mistake in believing that large homes cannot be energy efficient. Energy does not have to be politicized nor kicked around in the class envy warfare we are bombarded with on a daily basis.

To Anon 5:08. Many of the building techniques of 100 years ago made homes more energy efficient than most homes are today. For instances: Rumford Fireplaces are tremendously energy efficient. Thick walls made of masonary or stone are excellent insulators against heat and properly oriented to the sun, are good heat-sinks in the winter. Ten to twelve foot high ceilings allow hot air to rise so that down at "human" level, things are comfortable. Using a transom above a window or door allows the warm air to either blow right through a house in the summer or to circulate more freely in the winter. Our biggest personal energy saver has been to plant deciduous trees on the west side of our house. This gives us shade during the hottest part of the day in summer and sun in the winter. It may be that this home employed these strategies as well.

Big is not always bad. I bet most people who live in small homes would rather live in a bigger one if they could afford it! However, my pet peeve is a big home that has unusable spaces. All the designers out there will know what I mean. Some spaces are just a little to big to create a comfortable conversation area while not big enough to be able to utilize the left over space. Very annoying! One is required to add furniture that does nothing but fill space.

  43. I agree with anonymous that it is beautiful but it has no soul. However is was really done for staging purposes and therefore has to be impersonal. I am really over seeing everyone decorate like a restoration hardware brochure. I believe in throwing in a little burlap pillow here and there so that when the fad is over you can zip off the cover and put your feather insert into the next hot " must have". I always love what you do to your home Joni. Its fresh and current but not over the top in any one direction. The real talent of any interior decorator is to mix it up. It takes no talent to go to the furniture store and buy the complete set of everything that matches!!

  44. It is a beautiful home, true, but too big for most people. I know whites and neutrals are all the rage, but this house is screaming for color, just a little maybe? Does it all have to have the RH look? The stager could have been a teensy bit brave and thrown in some color. Now with that said, I'm so glad you showed it to us! I love your blog.

  46. It's just too white and doesn't really look like anyone could really live like this. Are we going too far with the trend colors of gray and white? Too much of a good thing maybe? The only color is on the knobs of the Wolf range in the kitchen. I gravitate toward the knobs.

  47. I think the problem with this house and this desire for "patina" or aged materials/furnishings (as witnessed by the recent RH line - whether they were successful or not in their designs they are trying to cash in on a huge trend) is that this "patina" implies history, lives lived, messes made, the wear and tear of generations etc. It's not the same (in my opinion) if you attempt to recreate it, no matter how authentically old the various components of the the whole are. It's never going to be what it should be and will always end up some sort of Disney Land of the Old. All McMansions are meant to be aspirational of a particular lifestyle and to connote class. This is just another version - perhaps the newer better version - of the standard McMansion.
And, really they could have done a slightly better job on the front landscaping.
I hope I get my point across, English is not my language.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well said. You cannot buy patina unless of course it's in a true antique. Most of this furniture looks like it's made in China where all of the RH furnishing are being made. Real patina represents real life, not some guy in a sweat shop with a paint brush and a rag in his hand.

    2. seriously? did you read where i said the furniture was from Custom Creations? 51. Overall, I agree with the posters who said that this house was missing something. Maybe it's that all of the furniture seemed identical in every room? Made the house seem like a hotel. Or a showroom.

I do really like that the same colors were used on the walls and trim throughout, but that should have been where the sameness stopped. It's not so much the lack of color that bothers me, just the lack of variety.

The mix of molding - having it in some places, not having it in others - also bothered me. The doorways look unfinished because they're attached to hallways with trim.

But you know what? Often the best way to determine what you do like is to see what you don't.

  52. Very nice post Joni. Although some builders consider it proprietary info, I wonder if you have ever considered adding floor plans to your posts? It would be so helpful in understanding the layout of some of these larger homes. This does come across as a bit cold and bland. I wonder if there was a tight deadline in getting it done...the true test of a home like this that sells quickly is whether or not the buyers chose to purchase the furnishings as well. Do you know if they did?

If you like the layout of this house, I suggest you take a look at the homes by Jack Arnold of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has a website. Many of his homes have been featured in Veranda, Tradional Home and House Beautiful. He is an absolute expert on the French and Country French genre. His homes use French doors almost everywhere possible and have all those charming little details that set them apart from the mob. He is a bit prima-donnaish about making changes but that is understandable since beauty is all about proportions and balance.

    2. i wish i could get floorplans but i do love studying a house until you can figure out what the floor plan looks like. the owners did not purchase the furniture as far i know. no deadline - this was a multi million dollar home, not some crappy spec house put up overnight. not sure how quickly it sold - the owners might have purchased it before it was even built. i don't know.

    3. Yes, the new owners bought the house with almost ALL of the furniture! They loved it AS IS and wanted practically every piece of furniture and the art - just as Tami spectacularly decorated it!

  54. Beautiful architecture. Love the floors most of all. I think the interior is well done and a very soothing palette, but obviously no one lives there (it's a show house, folks). I'm sure the owners will inject a little more life into it. I love the look of those French doors, however most of them appear to be fixed. In other words, you'd have little natural ventilation and would have to open a door to get any fresh air. Screen doors would spoil the look, so they probably wouldn't be opened much to keep the bugs out. The original Louisiana cottages were designed to make the most of the breezes - here you can't get any in the living room, dining room or study without opening the one pair of French doors (though it looks like you can't open any in the dining room at all). So you'd always be living in conditioned air. Does this bother anyone besides me? I like to be able to open up a house and breathe the fresh air when the weather is fine. (Is that saying something about the weather in Houston?) All in all, though, I think it's beautiful.

  55. Several comments have defended the decor on the fact that it's a show house. Most show houses in my area are a collaboration
of several designers who showcase their work in specific rooms of the house. This make the home more interesting to the viewer and often the design schemes must be approved so that the house has some flow to it. I think that is what's missing here - one designer who over worked one theme and ended up with a very furniture showroom looking outcome.

  57. There are a number of hues in this home that are not compatible. It could be the lighting, of course, but in areas where red brick floors are used, the designer often used grays on the wall tiles. In other cases very neutral rugs over the red tones in the reclaimed wood floors. The entire house is a study in hit and miss which begins at the front door with the brown trim on the windows and shutters. The house gives off a very muddy appearance despite its overall pleasing architecture. Hope we see what the new owners do with it over time.

  58. What a beautiful home! I especially love the master bedroom. The white padded headboard with the gray wood trim is to die for. The hardwood is gorgeous, but I do really love the seagrass in the other rooms. I love all white bed sets, I think they are so elegant. My mother always said a pair of good white sheets are the best thing you can buy (personally, I like Thomas Lee http://thomasleeltd.com/sheets.cfm ). I completely agree. When doing an all-white bed set, the sheets must be high-quality and keep a true white. If they bead or are not crisp, it makes the bed look sloppy.

In case no one has noticed, Joni manages to crank out 1 to 2 new blog posts per week. This is much more prolific than anyone I have seen except for the political blogs. What Joni provides us with is essentially a FREE design magazine. I do not know about the rest of you, but this is a lot of mental work. When Joni answers a "Miss Cote De Texas" question, she has to do a lot of thinking and research pictures to provide us with the eye candy we have come to expect. These interesting local Houston homes provide Joni with a "breather" so she can focus on digging up some really great stuff for her other posts.

While I myself have been guilty of dissing some of the homes that seem too "modern" or too cold, I do understand that Joni needs to provide some variety for herself, as well. While she IS an apparently bottomless pit of design knowlege (and I mean that in a nice way), meeting OUR immense need to hear "more, more, more" must be tiring.

However, Joni, could you please cater to those of us who like a warmer pallet and show some Carol Glasser designed homes? I think it would also be interesting to have a post about the history of French styled homes in the Houston area. Why are there so many? Why is French design so popular in your area?

  64. The exterior of this home is lovely. The interior has some nice features but some that I feel cost WAY too much money to replace and don't look "right" somehow. The bathrooms all look horrible to me, one has way too much marble and then has very bland wall that just don't seem to match the marble. What is up with the pretty wood sink cabinet with the marble top? It looks completely wrong.

I have gone over the pictures a couple times now and I know that it was staged but even if you take out the horrible decorating done here, things still don't match up right. I think the bathrooms are the worst but the kitchen isn't much better.

I can't believe no one else mentioned the odd pool table. The house is decorated in so much white and then there is this huge pool table just sitting there in a room with an antique rug and a chandelier? It just looks really off.

Maybe if you take out all the furnishings and redo all the bathroom and some of the kitchen components, it might could become a beautiful home..

This is not a remarkable home from a decorative point of view. How can you say that and meet your standard of "classy" I don't know and frankly don't care. I looked back to the earlier home Joni refers to that was done by the same design team, and I would almost be willing to swear that some of the furnishings in this home have been either recycled or reordered. Anyone can fill a house up with white furniture. No special talent is needed only a line of credit at your favorite furniture manufacturer or antiques firm. Groupings of white chairs with mammoth nailheads everywhere is not design.

    3. If you knew anything about high-end custom furniture you would see how beautifully detailed each piece is. Those "mammoth nails" as you referred to them as are a standard size 912 nail, each hand applied one at a time. The fabrics are all Belgium linen and yes neutral so that the eye is not distracted by loud color. The idea in this type of showcase is to enhance the beauty of the home. This home is a beauty and much of the furnishings, rugs, lamps and accessories were purchased by the new home owner. One can only imagine that she will add her personal touches to make it "hers".

  71. UFF DA! This home sure garnered plenty of venom and claws in the comments, didn't it?! Okay, here's what I was planning to say before I started reading through the Jerry Springer Show of Blog Comments:

    1. I love the pendant lights over the bar
    2. The club chairs around the mirrored table in the living room have nice lines and an interesting shape
    3. I love, LOVE how Tami used shirred fabric insets in the cabinetry door panels to hide the stereo components and speakers without compromising sound quality for that big TV. I have seen door treatments like that in "country French" homes, with rooster fabric or white fabric against darker wood cabinetry. What's special and different here is how Tami matched the fabric to the cabinetry so well that it disappears. I might not have even noticed it if Joni hadn't pointed it out in the text. The effect is clean and simple, not fussy at all. Brilliant!
    4. Here's what I was going to say about the color palette: I think the home could have used more variety from room to room due to its massive size. You don't want to walk through a 10,000 SF or 15,000 SF home and say, "Oh, more gray and white." The home was beautifully decorated in a current style that did exactly what Tami was hired to do -- which is help sell the home quickly! I think it would help for us all to remember that this was a design job WITHOUT CLIENTS. Clients give so much inspiration to designers: their personalities, their existing treasures and collections, etc. All this home would need to elevate it from bland to sensational would be clients with a jaw-dropping art collection, which Tami's neutral interiors would set off beautifully.

OK - I get it - they like Charlotte Moss and David Easton. I would love to showcase more of those two and others like them, but I don't their personal pictures.
I happen to think Tami and Robert Dame are two of the more talented people working in Houston - and anywhere. I love their work. Robert Dame is a legend. The architecture of this house is gorgeous- it's casual, but elegant, friendly - not formal. The doors, the ceilings, the windows - the floors - so wonderful.

Listen I need to say - those are not brick floors - they are wood floors using end pieces, almost like a parquet. In person it is easy to see, but doesn't translate to photographs. Go back and take a look. The floors - those are one of the most outstanding features here.

  73. I love the exterior! My husband and I are building a house in the Conroe area, raised brick (pier and beam) Acadian style and I'm really interested in the colors used on this house. I'm wondering specifically about the wood siding and if it was intentionally painted to have that aged look or if it's gotten that way over time. I'm not sure how old the house is. We want an easy maintenance exterior (especially my husband, lol), but I'm not sure how easily maintained this look would be.

If this is a newer house maybe someone might know how they got it to look as if it's been there forever? Especially the siding.

What a treasure to have in Houston! Thanks for sharing it with us!

  74. Joni....geez.....some of these commenters are on crack! Just because its not their taste......shut up with the negativity. There are many styles of decorating and architecture ......thank you for representing one style to us. I believe you are very indulgent with us in your post spreading many beautiful homes across the pages. Thanks for your time and research! I love this home.

  75. Hi there. Do you by chance know the source for the glass pendants over the bar? Thanks! Love the photos :)

  76. Joni,
I spent two years buying the land, hiring the architect (Robert Dame) and hiring Tami Owen (Designer) and bringing them all together to share in my 2012 showcase home. It was inspired by another home that I had seen. It was a really fun home and she is being injoyed by her new family. If you want to see more of our homes please feel free to go to our facebook or our website. If you would like a personally tour of any of our homes you can contact me direct. We have several homes that are just as beautiful and with different architectual styles. Thanks and have a great day!

  84. I haven't been here in a while. I'm very disappointed in the mean remarks. Life is too short to spend it arguing in a home decorating blog. That being said, in all honestly, I don't agree with most of the comments. I think this house is gorgeous. I can't believe the comments. It's absurd. The house is just unbelievable. I love every detail. Great job. And for what it's worth, Renee, I live in South Florida and I've always admired you. I'm moving in two weeks to live closer to my daughters and granddaughter. I actually wrote to you once and even told you how talented you were. If you look back, you will see the message.
