Today, it seems that everyone has this coffee table, the bricklayer table, in one version or another. Either cheap or terribly expensive, this is one popular coffee table.
Here’s an original one, from that gorgeous house in Belgium featured in Veranda. I’ll guess this table came from Axel Vervoordt. I have no idea for sure that it came from Vervoordt, only guessing. And I can only imagine how much it cost.
I wonder if it aggravates the owner (Belgium’s most popular fashion designer) that so many people now own cheap knock-offs of his table? I’ve seen them as low as $350. Or, does it make him happy to know that he was such a trendsetter? Now, if only we could find that paneling for $350!!!
Why does everyone want the same coffee table anyway? That was a question interior designer Kathy Slater asked herself. Slater hails from New Orleans and was looking for a coffee table for a client. Hoping to find inspiration, she went to a decorator showhouse, which had four rooms all showing the same OLY coffee table. That was start of an idea Slater had for designing her own tables. She couldn’t find what she wanted, so she decided to make it.
She wanted a coffee table that was contemporary – yet one that would fit in with all the classically designed interiors that New Orleans is famous for. Slater put pencil to paper and designed The Table Collection featuring a line of cocktail, console and side tables using hand painted finishes, iron, stone, antiqued mirror and painted wood. Of importance was keeping the tables beautiful, yet reasonably priced. Each line is named for an iconic street in New Orleans: Napoleon, Audubon, Chartres, and St. Charles, to name a few.
Kathy Slater’s tables are shown at a shop on Magazine Street where several artisans share the space. Here Slater stands with her latest design – the New Orleans bar cart. Behind her is her étagère and a coffee table from the collection.
Slater will be showcased as a “Design Master’ in the upcoming issue of New Orleans Homes and Lifestyles magazine. Four people are given this honor each year and Slater is thrilled to be a recipient for 2012.
Visit Slater at her shop on 3954 Magazine St. in New Orleans.
Sharing the shop are 2 great artists- George Marks and Julie Silver, Fifi Laughlin with her beautiful lamps, and Sheila Bartosic with Niermann Weeks furniture.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading about this giveaway, I felt like the dorky kid in "Welcome Back Kotter" flapping his arm in the air dying to be picked!! Kathy's line of tables is beautiful...My real favorite is the one you are giving away but my next favorite is the Napolean - the finish is fabulous. Thanks for the chance! Sharon

ReplyDeleteSo many items to choose from, but I've always wanted a bar cart! Interesting article, and really enjoyed the New Orleans decor! ;)
ReplyDeleteJoni, what a fabulous give-away! I love the Audubon coffee/tea table, the the perfect size for so many uses, if I'm the winner (and I hope that I am) it's going in between two Louis 14th chairs.

ReplyDeleteLimiting my choice to just one, difficult to do; but I would choose the Chartres Coffee Table. The graceful curved legs with the detailed feet are beautiful and topped off with the natural stone top which compliments the metal architecture of the table truly called out to me! aschultzfamily@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteLove Love Love the etagere! It has the most beautiful finish. I have just redone my family room and have been looking for a piece just like this! Thanks so much for the opportunity to win this beautiful piece.

Hmmmm. This is interesting: When I was growing up we had "Vervoodt's" iconic coffee table, but with a carrera marble top. My father, an architect, had it made. Now imagine....how lucky for me that the giveaway table is the new icon---the Audubon---''cause it's my favorite!!! beckymex@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the St. Charles coffee table. All of her pieces are just beautiful!

I love the upperline coffe table. It looks like it's floating, just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe St. Charles would look beautiful in my home. Love her style.
ReplyDeleteJoni thank you for such wonderful give a way! Love the tea table height Audubon table! Laurie'
ReplyDeleteJoni, they all are stunningly beautiful in their simplicity and grace, but my favorite was the Audubon tea table. So simple, with the perfect amount of detail to give it a feminine touch. What a coincidence that just yesterday I decided that a bricklayer-style table might be the right choice for a coffee table in our living room. My hesitation was that it might have been too contemporary and/or trendy and Kathy's tables are the perfect alternative - still clean but with the perfect amount of detail to set them apart. Thanks for sharing your great taste and thanks to Kathy for the generous giveaway.

A very handsome collection; have already forwarded the post to friends in New Orleans. I love the Audubon, especially the last image version with the taupe travertine with the molded edge. wwadeiii@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYou have the best giveaways, Joni! I love the Etagere! tracyfisher418@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThank you for introducing Kathy Slater's designs to us, really hard to pick a favorite because not only are they all beautiful and elegant, they would also work well in many different styles of interiors. But if I had to narrow it down I would pick the Audubon console in the antique gold finish for it's beauty and versatility, and I also love the Bienville etagere you showed above again in the antique gold finish, SO pretty! janicecarpentr@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI loved everything. If I had to pick it would be the etagere. Two actually, on either side of my sofa in the living room. So generous of Kathy for this amazing giveaway. foleymaria4@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteLove Kathy Slater's line of furniture. Exquisite! My favorite would have to be the Bienville Etagere. Thanks for an opportunity to win this giveaway!
