Today, it seems that everyone has this coffee table, the bricklayer table, in one version or another. Either cheap or terribly expensive, this is one popular coffee table.
Here’s an original one, from that gorgeous house in Belgium featured in Veranda. I’ll guess this table came from Axel Vervoordt. I have no idea for sure that it came from Vervoordt, only guessing. And I can only imagine how much it cost.
I wonder if it aggravates the owner (Belgium’s most popular fashion designer) that so many people now own cheap knock-offs of his table? I’ve seen them as low as $350. Or, does it make him happy to know that he was such a trendsetter? Now, if only we could find that paneling for $350!!!
Why does everyone want the same coffee table anyway? That was a question interior designer Kathy Slater asked herself. Slater hails from New Orleans and was looking for a coffee table for a client. Hoping to find inspiration, she went to a decorator showhouse, which had four rooms all showing the same OLY coffee table. That was start of an idea Slater had for designing her own tables. She couldn’t find what she wanted, so she decided to make it.
She wanted a coffee table that was contemporary – yet one that would fit in with all the classically designed interiors that New Orleans is famous for. Slater put pencil to paper and designed The Table Collection featuring a line of cocktail, console and side tables using hand painted finishes, iron, stone, antiqued mirror and painted wood. Of importance was keeping the tables beautiful, yet reasonably priced. Each line is named for an iconic street in New Orleans: Napoleon, Audubon, Chartres, and St. Charles, to name a few.
Kathy Slater’s tables are shown at a shop on Magazine Street where several artisans share the space. Here Slater stands with her latest design – the New Orleans bar cart. Behind her is her étagère and a coffee table from the collection.
Slater will be showcased as a “Design Master’ in the upcoming issue of New Orleans Homes and Lifestyles magazine. Four people are given this honor each year and Slater is thrilled to be a recipient for 2012.
Visit Slater at her shop on 3954 Magazine St. in New Orleans.
Sharing the shop are 2 great artists- George Marks and Julie Silver, Fifi Laughlin with her beautiful lamps, and Sheila Bartosic with Niermann Weeks furniture.
