COTE DE TEXAS: My Design: Family Room

My Design: Family Room

Well, the big day finally arrived. The sofa, pictured above, that I picked out months ago was delivered this week. It's an old cliche, but very true: A designer can decide in a nanosecond what her client needs, but when it comes to the designer's own home? Forget it! The hold up was I couldn't decide what chairs would look good with the sofa because it has dramatic lines, with a high curved back, great depth, low - almost nonexistent - arms, and gorgeous, dark wood mouton legs. The truth is, I have waited my whole life for a George Smith sofa and arm chairs and I guess I'll be waiting for another life time. It's just not going to happen this time. As hard as I tried to make a pair of Smith's club chairs work, they just didn't look good next to the French styled sofa. So, after a few months of turmoil and indecision, back and forth, I finally decided on French wing chairs with mouton legs. The lines of the chair are very similar to the sofa. Decision finally made, chairs built, voila - it's here. As big of a change that it is to me, if you walk into my family room today, you may not even notice there is any new furniture at all, unless, of course, you're a design freak. Both my old and new sofa and chairs are slipcovered in white linen. The old wicker arm chair, my former perch, is now gone, replaced by the wing chair. But still, the overall effect is the same: white slipcovers contrasted with dark wood furniture. While the new furniture is not from George Smith, it is custom made, with all down cushions and it is tres comfy. Here's what my family room looks like with the new couch and chairs:

The only decision left concerns the pillows. This is what I'm thinking about - it's new from F. Schumacher, thick linen, gray and white - birds, of course, with the Quadrille negative-color toile feel. The fabric pops on the white sofa and repeats the high contrast of the white against the dark wood. What do you think? Should I use this fabric, or perhaps zebra, or even, dare I say, kwid or lulu?

Below, is another F. Schumacher fabric that seems to coordinate with my first choice. Or would a solid in deep raspberry or dark charcoal be better? What is your opinion? Do you have another suggestion?

AND.... One last design note. On my coffee table (which I would like to replace with a zinc one!!!) is a large blue & white Oriental bowl. It's huge and it's from Tozai Home, the upper-end division of Two's Company. Inside the bowl, I keep tons of loose photographs and old Christmas cards. I suggest this to all of my clients, especially the ones with myriad tacky picture frames cluttering every table and shelf. I've discovered that loose photos placed in a bowl invites conversation. At family gatherings, inevitably, one or two people will sit by the bowl and go through the whole thing, picture by picture. When was the last time anyone really looked at all your pictures in their frames? Toss those frames, put the photos in a big bowl, and watch your friends actually look at your photos for the first time.

  1. How beautiful! I wish I had the sort of house to fill with light, airy furniture. I love the Schumacher bird fabric, and I think a solid raspberry would be a wonderful addition. I usually do the photos in the bowl at Christmas, when everybody sends family pics!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful room!

Your blog is outrageously wonderful. I have no idea what I am doing on mine, I am new to this and just trying to figure out what to do. But YOURS is divine! I am moving in here so I can devour everything. So beautiful!

And your room is so lovely. I know exactly what you mean, I cannot decide on ANYTHING for my house. Always undecided and wanting to make the perfect choice, of course!

I love everything you have done, I have no further comment.

Thanks so much for coming by! Glad we can suffer from our infliction together!

  7. O.K. So you kinda freaked us all out...you were gone for so long and did not tell us you'd be away! Anywhooo, so glad you are back and I must say that family room is 'A++'. I am going to go on the hunt for a huge bowl. Thanks for the tip. I love it!

  9. AWWWWWWWWWW!!! Thanks everyone!! I was very insecure to post these pictures, because, well you never know!!! And no, I haven't gone away at all. It's just been six days? My problem is I start obsessing about my posts and do research and get lost on the web looking at stuff and then another day goes by. I'll try to hurry them up. Thank you all SO much for your sweet, sweet comments.

  10. I love the idea of the photo bowl. I have to wait until my children get a bit older (almost 2 & just 3) but this is a keeper!! I'm a little type A so by the time I can commit to the idea they should be old enough not to ruin the pictures!
    Beautiful room! Great job!

  11. I have just discovered your blog recently and am so happy! Your home is lovely - I say go for the rasberry pillows - they will "pop" on the white background with the fabulous bird fabric on the other pillows! What a beautiful room.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Joni, I love your room! Very charming and cozy. I have a white slipcovered sofa mysef and never tire of it. I agree with a couple of the others - go for the raspberry pillows! What a punchy contrast of warmth that would be!

  13. Joni, where do i start?!! :-)

    1. Love the sofa and chairs. Very elegant and they are going very well together. Dark wood and white linen upholstery are my favorite (have the same combination in my living room!)..I think the combinaton is looking awesome!
    2. The little corner next to the wall with pictures is so nice and intimate
    3. I like the 1st choice of fabric. Deep raspberry will look soo nice! For something more dramatic, you can try color combination of ochre and burnt orange..
    4. Bowl full of trivia! Such a brilliant idea!

Loved this post! [As you might have guessed by now ;-)]

    ReplyDelete
  14. Flawless? Absolutely!
I would go for your first choice of the grey cushions - though a little raspberry/red somewhere else in the room would be nice.
Have you thought of having the existing coffee table covered in Zinc rather than replacing it?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Joni, great furniture choices! So timeless and chic -- like Rose Tarlow.

Personally I love the Schumacher print that you posted here -- again timeless but not matronly, feels very "now." But all your ideas sound good. You can't really go wrong with your neutral background :)

  16. Love your style. Love your blog. Raspberry pillows would make a statement. Love the graphic look of the graphic bird pattern; brings a modern touch to the room. BTW: I, too, would love your opinion on sisal, seagrass, wool blend rugs.

  17. Joni, Joni, Joni!
Why you would be insecure is beyond me! The room is GORGE! And I thought it looked great with the pillows in the first pics. Love the pics in the bowl idea. I am stealing it...I am sure you will not mind. AND I have been trying to convince my husband about the benefits of seagrass for ages. I am convinced now that I must just order it and he will have to live with it. I do love that Schumacher fabric and the other charcoal print as well.

Sigh, there is just something about white slipcovers that I adore. I will probably be back to look at the room again for inspiration. :)

  18. Gorgeous!! Your choices have created a wonderful, charming and completely welcoming room! You really do have the most marvellous gift for display and settings too!

LOVE your style!! Been staring at this posting while the tea and cinammon toast get cold! LOL!

Jan x at Rosemary Cottage who will be doing her less-then-stylish laundry today -- LOL! (and baking during loads!)

  19. You know what they say - "The Shoemakers children have no shoes"! I sympathize with your hesitancy and indecision regarding your own home - but honestly, yours is absolute perfection. Betty Lou has nothing on you.

My two cents regarding the pillows - Love both fabrics. Do double sided pillows with each side in one of the two Schumacher prints welted in your white linen. Then you can flip them over for a change of scenery when the mood strikes you. Add smaller accent pillows or lumbar pillows on the other chairs in an ocher color to pick up the sunny tones of your walls. I would avoid the raspberry as it will turn your gorgeous gray accents navy, especially if you are serious about the zinc table.

    Glad you're back,
    Jackie

  23. Hi Anonymous - You're back!!!!! ok, I know you're a man - a woman wouldn't be this cruel, but I can take it - let me address all your "ideas" - 1) I love the idea of the Hermes Orange (just bought a purse that color) - and had talked about using that color with Jackie today, as a matter of fact, but the contrast welt is too contemporary for my house. Love the idea though. 2) I would love a huge bowl with more age, would you buy it for me? I don't have fake antiques because I LIKE them! haha 3) dough bowls, yecch, no thanks 4)baskets - I probably have more french laundry baskets, grape baskets, old baskets in every corner of my house - what you can't see in this picture on the opposite wall is two large antique baskets filled with books. 5) I DO have larger antique mirrors in my house, but that bullseye mirror is a period antique from the French Quarter and it is gorgeous. It actually fits the space perfectly and I do like it there, though a big mirror would be great too. What you can't see is it reflects another smaller bulls eye on the opposite wall and I kind of like that effect and YES, I hate those topiaries on there - give me a suggestion. On the chair next to it I have an antique wooden capital with a huge candle on it. I do have tons of glass containers with large candles that rotate around, blah blah - just didn't have that out that day. But gee, what you are describing sounds a little like a Williams Sonoma Catalogue look, slick with rough textures and that's just not really my look. The look I like is more accumulated clutter, piles of books everywhere, not just a few big accessories - that look is too styled for me plus I like to buy too much! You like the zinc table? I bought a zinc dining room table last week and then canceled it at the last minute. I'm looking for a high coffee table made out of zinc - I've seen a few here in Houston at Shabby Slips, but I missed the chance to buy it. OH and yes, I know the dogs are done done done - !!!! But, it's a long story, I probably should put them away for another century. I was forced to buy them when years ago I bought a Spanish portrait and decided he looked too much like my dad but not in a positive way - I had a credit at the store and those dogs were the only thing I could stand to get with it. You're right, Ill put them away and put some glass candles out. AND USE YOUR NAME, CHICKEN MAN! hahaha - I love it!

  26. This is addressed to anon - I hope you realise you are critiquing a professional. A professional, I might add, I would not hesitate to work with - and I am one demanding bastard (I would prefer to use a much more English word instead, but there are ladies present). How dare you presume to give her a 'to do' list.
Your observations are petty and your recommendations are banal (? look it up).
CdT has invited us into her home - not a project - I suggest you behave like a guest. One's duty as a guest is to be polite and respectful of one's host. And to be entertaining; not boorish.

  31. I just stopped back in for some more inspiration and read that nasty comment from mr. anon, or ms. anon. Sounds like the horrid woman who tried to put me in my place the other day! I bet she is the same woman.

I happen to love your living room, and the dogs (I have some too, and I adore them). I think the most chic people in the world are people who accumulate treasures over time, know how to display them, and love them even when others say they are "over". Real treasures are never OVER.

Your house is my ideal, relaxed, looks like you are a long time collector of beautiful things, yet you have taste. You don't have junk just for the sake of having displays.

I'd have you over to work on my house anyday, and I get paid to work on other people's! You have a great eye.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, I'm just catching up on my posting and I'm sorry I missed this exchange! Joni, your house is beyond gorgeous. I like the fact that the pieces have been accumulated over time- it does not look like you've run out and bought everything at the same time. Creates a "layered" look which is really what good design is all about, imho.

    ReplyDelete
  34. "Chicken man"!! Love it - you are not only a talented, articulate designer, you are hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Me again.........I agree with Melissa, "real treasures are never OVER"! Sometimes it is fun to mix them up with other treasures, though - how about mixing the dogs in with some other things on your book shelves?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Gosh, so much dog discussion. ok, on that table, I have the two real
Staffordshire dogs, large. My bf, Lisa gave me 2 more pairs of the smaller curly haired dogs from her grandmother, so I'm keeping them for her when she moves into her own place. And I have two black and white French antique transferware plates that have a poem or story written on them. So, it all kind of goes together and I know the dogs have been copied to death for the mass market, but the originals are still cute, we have two spaniels, and they look good with the white slipcover furniture, so I'm keeping them.

    Joni

  43. Joni-forgot to say that I was very cross after reading the nasty anonymous comments you've got lately! I had some similar ones, so I simply changed my blog settings to block anonymous comments! Perhaps this 'anonymous' design expert should show us how it's done by showcasing their own home? Somehow I don't think that will be happening...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Joni - what a beautiful room! Actually, I love the coffee table you have, because it's kind of rough hewn looking and gives a little "careful, careless" layering to the space.(maybe I'm just partial,as I have something similar in my living room!) The new sofa is beautiful, but where it is, can you see the beautiful side detailing? But, I have to say, I think I'd just want to sit in there and just be. Well done!

  45. Wonderful, I think part of the beauty is that the fireplace is not front and center. So your layout is genius, interesting and engaging. Heddy

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks everyone again! Wow, 45 comments that's a record (some are mine, but still!) Thanks! Heddy -the only reason why my fireplace is not front and center is that the couch and chairs and too wide, so I have to put the chair in front of the fireplace somewhat. I oould solve it with about a 1ft wider seagrass rug but then the rug bleeds into the pathway/hall from the front of my house to the back so it gets in the middle of all the action. So the chair has to be more in front of the fireplace than I would prefer, glad you like the mistake better!

  50. Joni,
I have a George Smith Sofa fund. I've had it for four years. My designer friend told me I could use his discount and their huge sale each year, the Sofa do-able. Maybe next year. Who made your sofa? You said it was custom made. As long as it was made well, I'd consider any custom maker. My Mom bought a custom sofa in 1968 in a classic English Arm style (which is what I'm getting). It's been recovered two times. I think she paid $3000 in 1968 dollars. The frame is solid. My Dad still has it. It's an investment!

I don't know how I missed your charming post about the photos in the bowl. I smiled because at work, I have a Murano cobalt bowl with vintage post cards of Dallas in it. It's a huge conversation starter.

Just wondering who made your sofa. It's beautiful.

  51. I know this is an older post, so not sure if you'll see this comment, but I am wondering if you could tell me where I could find the gray Schumacher fabric. I LOVE it, and your house too!
