COTE DE TEXAS: An Invitation to a Large Antique Sale

An Invitation to a Large Antique Sale

   image

For sale at 2226 Quenby, this house is furnished in French antiques for a large open house this weekend.

Last year, antiques dealer Mignon Topping of French Collectibles came to Houston, bringing with her a collection of gorgeous French antiques and modern art.   The sale lasted a weekend and was held at an open house on Virginia St.  This weekend, Mignon is back with more antiques, showcasing another new house for sale in Southampton by the Rice Village at 2226 Quenby.  I went by the house this Thursday after Mignon had spent all day setting up  and everything looked just beautiful.    The sale is all  this weekend long:  April 16-18, Friday through Sunday – 11:oo am until 5:00 pm.   If you are into French antiques, don’t miss this.

 image The entry hall.

Walking into the house, there is a large entry hall, with the dining room on the right and a library on the left.  The family room and kitchen is in the back, located through the archway.  Mignon  has furnished the entire downstairs with antiques mostly procured in France.  Additionally, there are many rugs of all sizes, along with a large assortment of modern art work.   I was stunned by the quality of her antiques – the collection of chairs, mirrors, and chests was staggering.   Although the antiques are very fine, I found the prices to be surprisingly reasonable.   If you like French antiques, I highly suggest you stop by 2226 Quenby this weekend.

imageI had my eye on this painted console and trumeau.   There are so many wonderful mirrors!

image

This chair was gorgeous.   Hard to resist.  Look at the hardware on this chest – so beautiful!  And the clock is adorable – painted in a light cream with a turquoise accent color.

image The dining room in the house is really nice – very large.  I loved this dining room table and set of chairs.   Mignon puts it all together so well – it actually looks like a furnished house.    Amazing how it all fits together inside the house.

image

Another gorgeous chest.  Not all the art work is contemporary – there are many canvases that are antique.

image OK.  I’ll say it again – another gorgeous chest!  Seriously, I can’t remember when I’ve seen such a large collection of chests this beautiful.   Notice the smaller mirror in front of the larger one.  Mignon has brought a number of smaller mirrors which are great for powder rooms.   I loved this trumeau – it’s painted a very light green color.

image The front library has this wonderful painted Swedish desk which I adored!

image

Hiding in the corner of the library is this perfect French antique barometer.

image

Another chest, paired with contemporary art work.

image

The library is closed off from the foyer by a pair of French doors.

image

The foyer – looking towards the front door and dining room.  The rugs are fabulous – there are so many of all sizes.

image

The arched walkway between the foyer and family room – two painted French chairs sit next to a wonderful painted table.  I loved this table – small painted ones like this are so hard to find.

image

The family room is filled with more chairs, benches, tables, chests, mirrors, and this fabulous French sofa.

image

More family room:   two wonderful sets of candlesticks, a set of bergeres, and a fabulous gilt tray table!

image The family room – looking towards the back yard with the kitchen off to the right.   This coffee table has a beautiful patina.

image A vignette in the family room.

Close up of the chest, seen above.

image

And a close up of the painted French chaise longue.  I really like the standing lamp.

image

Hello!!!   Yet, another fabulous chest.  I TOLD you!!!!    Here, Mignon has layered mirrors again, the smaller one is just perfect.

image Next to the family room through a large arch, is the breakfast area and kitchen.    Another great mirror.  The table is so pretty too!

image

The kitchen has great cabinetry and appliances.

The house is really pretty, very well finished throughout.  It was built on spec by Stephen Blalock of Blalock Builders.   A real plus for this house is its location in Southampton where many of the garages are located in alleyways so that there are no driveways or front loading garages.   This small detail makes such a huge difference in the way a neighborhood looks.    Why aren’t all garages located off back alleyways?  When did we stop building houses like that?  Why?

image In the back of the house, there is a large covered brick porch, which Mignon has furnished, of course!

image On the back porch, located off the breakfast area, there is an assortment of dining tables and more chests.

image

This painted chair with its original embroidered fabric is stunning.

imageThere is an assortment of mirrors placed in the downstairs powder room, so be sure to peek inside.

image

How adorable is this wooden dog bed?!!   I was lusting for this for Miss Sammie Jo.

image The house, seen here on HAR without the furniture, is listed for sale by Linda Walsh  Johnson with Greenwood King Realtors, HERE.   The house is 2 1/2 stories with 5 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths.  The square footage is 4,961.

image The dining room is connected to the kitchen by a wet bar, located through the archway on the left.

image The front library, located through French doors.

image The family room, overlooking the back yard.

image The family room, facing towards the foyer and front door.

image The breakfast and kitchen are off the family room.   The covered porch is to the right, off the breakfast area.

image The kitchen is very large with great appliances.

imageThe upstairs landing has built in shelves.

image The master bathroom with white marble.   There is a large media room upstairs with two more rooms and a bathroom located on the third level.

Finally, a special thanks to Mignon Topping for allowing me to photograph the house Thursday.  Good luck this weekend!

  6. I just said a lot of very unladylike words knowing I cannot be there. I saw so many things that I have had pictured in my head for my next house. Which I may be in sooner than I previously thought.
Please buy yourself something gorgeous and show us all.

  7. Wow Joni, that house is stunning. Love the architecture and builder finishes coming out of houston. You definitely don't see that much attention paid to things like floor mouldings in new builds up my way! :)

  11. Oh Joni, after drooling over every image in this gorgeous post of yours, I clicked on the link to the real estate site.... do you know how affordable your beautiful homes are!!! For 500K here you would get a box, way out of town, no embelishments... well no-one really knows what a cornice, wainscotting, or panelling is in this hick town of mine. I can't believe all the beautiful detailing even in the lower priced homes in your area... built-in libraries and wardrobes, the panelling, the floors and beautiful kitchens. Hubby and I were laughting at the superb quality ones in the 900k to a million range.... you would easily pay over 5 million for that quality here. I'm movin' to your hemisphere! A-M xx

  15. You've had a magnificent week. First the flea sale and now this! Shopping overload! Beautiful pieces. Love the bench in the living room. That would be so pretty at a dining table, and the floor lamps in the dining room are such a great size. Nothing that exciting in Dallas this weekend...guess I'll have to get in the car if I want to shop!

  16. Joni this house is gorgeous the details and architecture are amazing. I agree about the back alleys and garages. There is one community I have been too that is a recent build that has done that and what a difference in the way the community looks. Would love that. I think it is a wonderful idea!! Thanks for all the great eye-candy. Now the question is , what are you going to bring to your home?!! Kathysue

  17. You make me want to move to Houston. I grew up back East in a very traditional environment and now live in Colorado, which has a very...distinct style which I cannot say is my favorite. Every post you do makes me fall in love with the Houston style even more.

  18. What a gorgeous home!! Im ready to move in. I would love to attend an estate sale with so many beautiful antiques. We don't generally have those here in TN.

BTW~I just listened to the SRT with Tobi. I know, it's from forever ago, but it was really great. I speak with her a lot through social media and I just adore how gracious she is. The interview you girls did with her was so informative, and I love hearing how other designers found their success, and niche. Ya'll do a great job with the interview questions and really get down to the nitty gritty. Thanks, the design world greatly appreciates!!

  23. Hi Joni!
Well first I love this woman's name! She obviously is an excellent merchandiser. It is well put together and I think it is a very clever venue for presentation of her product.
There certainly is a lot of merchandise in there! I also loved the house without the furniture. Maryannne :)

I, too could buy it all!

  25. Hi joni,

Everything is so beautiful and I can't begin to tell you what I would do for that much sq footage.

I have a weird question but important to me. I have noticed in several of the homes you have profiled that they always have amazing rain gutters. I need to replace mine and would like some that are more decorative and add to the house instead of taking away.

Can you recommend a store or supplier?

    Thanks,
    Katie

  26. Comment to Anon:
Puzzled - all gutters pictured in all homes for the last few months have been standard-run-of-the-mill painted galvanized gutters.(Source - Home Depot to The Gutter Man) If you'd like custom lead or copper try Vogler in Houston.

  30. Sensory overload!!! It's hard to slow down and take in all of the details because you want to rush to the next photo!! Everything was styled beautifully.
I love the breakfast table and chairs. And all of trumeaus are gorgeous too.

  31. Wow! This is a beautiful home and the antiques are definitely over the top. We have just built a new home and still have our previous home on the market. You have visited my blog and seen that I have a similar design style and sell antiques as well. How effective do you think this type of marketing is,both for the sale of the house and the merchandise? I am seriously considering trying this and would really appreciate your feedback.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks everyone for your kind comments! If you have any questions, Mignon will be happy to answer them - her phone number is at the end of the post.

p.s. I loved the house too and wanted to move there. it was beautiful. small to no backyard though. that's the only drawback.

  33. "Why aren’t all garages located off back alleyways? When did we stop building houses like that? Why?"

Joni- I couldn't agree with you more! It pains me to to drive through a neighborhood and see enormous garage doors (open or closed) and my brain screams- WHY???

Hope you came away from the sale with a few treats- those chests are to die for.

  34. They are lovely but the French antique barometer is my favorite.

  35. What a great idea to have an antiques sale in a vacant home listed for sale! I think I shall try that in my area! What lovely items throughout that house..wow..a treasure trove for sure!!! Do you know how Mignon did with the sale??

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is pure genius! Hoping with fingers crossed that someone in the NY CT area reads this and decides to hold something like this up here! The house holds it's own empty as well, its a gem! Only more so once its filled to the brim with so much eye candy! PS Have the biggest pet peeve about garage doors in the front! (yuck)

  40. Joni:

Your post never disappoints. How beautiful - the antiques - the architecture - paintings. Especially love the large painting resting on the chest of the lady in white and the gladiator in what appears to be an orange grove? Do you know the name of the artist or name of the painting? Love the colors and romantic feel. I need to visit Houston.

  44. I talked to Mignon Topping today. She said she had another show/exhibit after this one in Houston, so she hasn't had a chance to check her email. She said the abstract artists were two from New Orleans -- Julie Silvers and Adele Sypesteyn. Both artists' works are on display at Soren Christensen Galleries in New Orleans.

    Here's a link to Julie's work:
