Last year I showed a house that I had decorated that was across the street from my own house. In the breakfast area, I used a large, contemporary styled lantern.
The lantern came from BROWN, a fabulous lighting and decor shop in Houston owned by the talented Jill Brown. Afterwards, Jill was kind enough to host a giveaway of the same lantern here on Cote de Texas. Needless to say, the giveaway was a huge success and many of you entered in hopes of winning.
Here's the lantern we gave away. The winner had the choice of the 4 lights or 1 light with an Edison bulb. She chose the 4 lights, if memory serves me correct!
BROWN is located in Houston in a charming house-like setting with Zen styled landscaping.
Jill has a certain aesthetic and everything about her and her store reflects it. She is a true original, with a great sense of style and presentation. Here, for a party for the magazine Garden & Gun, she set up an old-timey store on the covered front porch. These were the goodies for the guests.
Although BROWN's specialty is lighting fixtures, one area of the store is set up for general goods. It seems as if Jill sells everything - from antique copper pots to candles.
As always, everything has Jill's "look" about it. She loves Belgian styling, but she also very much into American antiques.
Even the design of her web site is uniquely Jill. You can view her web site at www.shopbybrown.
Or, you can choose to enter the website by the fanciful THING-FINDER, located HERE.
Here is a small selection of her wares, as sold on 1st Dibs. Jill sells antique light fixtures and a line of new ones that she designs herself under the label Far-Fetched.
The store changes often - it never looks quite the same from one day to the next. It's like visiting a magical place, you never know what fabulous treasure you are going to find at BROWN.
So, what is the giveaway you ask? Have I tortured you enough?
The giveaway today is this original light fixture from BROWN. It's a little hard to see exactly - but it's made of hand carved wood, painted a distressed light gray - perfect for today's trendy look. It has five lights that extend from the center column on gracefully carved iron arms. Each arm has a hanging tassel, also made of painted gray wood. The light fixture is hand crafted of antique wood and iron and has a retail value of $3,100. Yes, $3,100.!!!! And it can be yours - if you win the giveaway!
Another view of the gray wood and iron light fixture.
And looking up at it from the bottom. Disregard the chains - they are just used to hold up all the chandeliers.
HOW TO WIN:
All we ask that you do is visit www.shopbybrown and go to either the store or the 1st Dibs site or both. Look around at what is for sale and pick one item that speaks to you personally. Then, come back here to the blog comment section and tell me what you picked and why! That's it!!!
If you really want to be nice and you have a twitter account, please be so kind to tweet about the giveaway as a thank you to Jill.
Remember, if you post anonymously, be SURE to leave your name and email address in case you win!! If there's no email address, you can't win. :(
The contest will run this week and close on Friday at 11:59 p.m.
Good luck to everyone and a huge, huge thank you to Jill Brown for hosting this wonderful giveaway!!!
For a peek at Jill's house, read a story I ran several years ago HERE. The pictures were taken before I knew what I was doing with a camera, so be kind!!
A HUGE AND FABULOUS GIVEAWAY FROM BROWN!!!

What a fascinating store. I enjoyed viewing their website and their merchandise on 1st Dibs.
ReplyDeleteI was intrigued with the faux bois planter. It reminded me of my recent trip to Pont Aven and a charming bridge there with faux bois railings. It also had great patina and lichens!
Hi Joni,
ReplyDeleteI was having touble with the link. I did find the store online. The link may not be working because the (dot.com) is missing.
Perhaps I will get an extra entry for perserverence. :)
I love the Napolean III chairs found on her 1st Dibs site.
I am crossing my fingers SO badly for this lovely chandelier. You should see what hangs above my dining table. Horrific.
I love Brown!
No. 021 is fabulous for a little more elegant lantern...I think I'd order it with multi bulbs rather than the Einstein bulb.
ReplyDeleteNo. 024 looks like a really handsome fixture too....No. 25 is wonderful.
No. 022 is still great looking and I'd love to have it! I've got to make a trip to Houston soon, just to go to Brown!
I also had trouble with the link. Just did a google search and found her site. So glad I did - as I am captivated by the Antique Belgian floor lamp! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI remember the last time you offered this stunning giveaway from Brown. Wondrous! I cannot BELIEVE you and Brown are offering this again! Thank you...
ReplyDeleteI definitely fell in love with the beautiful Gateleg Table on the Brown site ~ Products:Furniture:Tables:oo4. It has a lovely patina and the most adorable carved-paw feet. It would look stunning in my house... Now I just need to get Husband to drive down to Houston and buy it. :D

My favorites are the antique Napoleon III butcher block (I wish I had a kitchen big enough for it); the iron 2-light chandelier and the pair of sand-blasted mortars and pestles (no. 001). ReplyDeleteThank you for a wonderfully generous giveaway - I can hardly wait til Friday! Besides the little felted giraffes with the sweet faces (made me smile!) Brown looks like a fabulous store to visit---so much "eye candy", and I am lucky to be only 50 miles away! My favorite on the site is the mortar and pestle. It looks to be out of glass. I love to cook and this would add character and function to my kitchen. The wonderful chandelier for the giveaway would be perfect in my shabby chic dining room. Hope to win.
ReplyDeletemph007@yahoo.com
I am in the process of selecting lighting for my home! I love the copper lanterns (and all lighting really) but I was really drawn to the Saint Bernard picture under the wall art section. Too cute for my son's room!
ReplyDeleteI am completely drawn to the old school charts of insects. I am terrified of bugs (I can put hot wax on my body and rip hair out but insects make me cry..) and yet something about the school charts....
ReplyDeletedebokate@yahoo.com

Hi - thanks for turning me on to her shop! What beautiful merchandise! I love Chandelier 015, along with the one you are featuring. Drooling over the carved wood detailing...

ReplyDeleteSince your posting of the house you did last year I fell in love with the Custom Lantern with 4 Lights over the Dining Table. It has references to the past yet is so simple and modern. I ADORE the 1940 vintage handblown Murano chandelier with pink and blue flowers. It looks like the ultimate little girl (and not so little girl) birthday cake. It is the essence of fantasy and evokes Marie Antoinette and the Petit Trianon. Ever since I can remember, I was drawn to the ultra feminine, and this is it!

Thank you soooo much Joni and Jill for this amazingly generous giveaway..the chandi is gorgeous! I am so happy you led to Brown's sites..what eye candy..wish Jill could open a shop like hers here in NH. I loved so many things there but found myself drooling over 2 chandies..01 and 15..yes I'm feeling greedy..want them both!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI also took the tour of Jill's home..we are polar opposites in decor but I'm in love with her "oh so original style". I kept going back to the pigeon prints,(I would love to know where to find some!) and her court yard...I felt like I could walk right through the page with my cup of coffee and news paper and sit for a long while. The simplicity and balance of the wood, iron, stone and greenery has such an organic calming effect.
Joni I also just love the home across the street you have featured...simply beautiful. I always look forward to receiving your latest posting via my email!

Of course, the lamp would look amazing in my bedroom. I love Jill's style and been salivating over her things for quite some time!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT ALL! :) I really like the simple wall sconce no 003 ff! Been searching far and wide for simple yet beautiful outdoor lanterns...and they just may be found here in Houston! I should have known Brown would have them! Crossing my fingers and legs!

We are building a new home in Birmingham, Alabama and I've been on the hunt for unique lighting that isn't fussy or trendy. I just checked out Brown's 1stDibs site and I think I've found a one-stop shop for all of the lighting in our new home. In fact, I just Google Mapped Brown's store and it is exactly 675 miles from Birmingham. I think I need to fly out there and drive back a U-Haul full of fabulous Brown lighting. There is one light in particular that I am loving. It's the "Hand-wrought very simple 4 light custom chandelier". I am a big fan of things being symmetrical and this clean streamlined design is big and packs a powerful punch!
ReplyDeleteJoni, what a GREAT giveaway!!! I am in love with the Belgian floor lamp!!!
ReplyDeleteThe gray wood and iron light fixture would look FABULOUS in my dining room! ;)

Oh my I love BROWN! I see so many things that I LOVE but if I'm choosing I think I really love 022ff for my space. What a cool store! Thank you for blogging about BROWN!
ReplyDeleteWOW. This truly is such a fabulous store. And this light fixture is just the answer I've been searching for, for our "new" kitchen. We've painted, updated the table + chairs, curated some new and old accessories in fun ways and added a new rug, in a mini-makeover attempt... But, have yet to find the perfect light fixture. And I know that this gorgeous gray wood and iron fixture is THE ONE. Although there was SO much to love at Brown. I'm especially drawn to the no. 006 wall sconce - the dreamy, five arm design, in that fantastic weathered metal finish is to die for! A couple of those would add a fantastic touch to another room in our home we've been working on - our front, formal living room/future dream library :-) Thanks so much for the opportunity. I'm crossing my fingers, BIG time, for this one!

Joni, I do not need the lantern, even though it is very beautiful. I just wanted to say that this store is amazing and displayed so beautifully. The owner has done a nice job of a mix between old and new. Thanks for sharing her information with us. Good luck to the winner. Richard from My Old Historic House.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE this store, and what a generous giveaway! Believe it or not, the fixture that is the giveaway would be exactly what I would purchase (although I would spend hours and $$$$$$ in the store if I had the chance to...). I love this style and how "airy" it is.
ReplyDeleteJill has a wonderful concept & her displays "invite" you in. I wish I would have known of her shop earlier- left Houston yesterday. Something to look forward to for the next trip.
ReplyDeleteCopper fixtures are a favorite of mine and the lighting caught my eye. Unique items are always fun and add personality to a home. Thank you for hosting the giveaway and introducing the readers to Brown.

I love vintage things (I recently acquired a vintage croquet set that just makes me smile), and I love that she titled that section "things"! I am drawn to the abacus, probably because of my love of math (I am an accounting geek) and the mix of metal and wood. I can't even imagine owning such a fabulous chandelier, but would certainly give it a loving home:)Thank you, Maria Proctor treeamigosjp@bellsouth.net

ReplyDeleteI really like the black and gold rounded mirror in no. 005. I could put that any number of places in my home. The chandelier being given away is beautiful too!
ReplyDeleteOh, I so wish we had a store like that here. It is so beautiful and that chandelier is amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteAs a matter a fact I would love any of her lighting, it is so unique. I am on the look out for sconces and I have to say it is a tough decision with all of her wonderful options.
Thank you for your great blog, I love reading it!
I use to live in Houston + I adore the vintage iron basket light on 1st dibs., she has grand lights. thanks pegbraswelldesign@msn.com
ReplyDeleteHi Joni,
ReplyDeleteThere were two items that I thought were exceptionally beautiful. THe first was a mirror (no5) and the second was a lantern (no 37). After some thought, I would have to choose the mirror. I have a new appreciation for antique mirrors instead of reproduction pieces from reading several of your posts. Thank you so much for always posting such thoughtful and engaging information. I have learned a great deal from your blog.
A very very nice store!! Beautiful lighting fixtures!
ReplyDeleteThe one above the table at your clients accross your street, seems as the one our Belgian company TEKNA is selling!A gorgeous one!!
xx

When I saw your giveaway my heart started beating faster than it did in my boxing class this morning! I found Brown on 1st Dibs and then "follow" them via your blog. I actually recommended my FAVE lantern - the iron and glass 4 light lantern (no. 022 ff) to a friend of mine and she bought it from 1st dibs a couple of years ago. I figured that if I couldn't have it (yet) then I wanted someone I really like to! It looks amazing over her kitchen table, which is actually quite contemporary. So, until I can have my own, I visit hers. Truly, I have looked and looked for another option and I keep coming back to the timeless lantern as nothing else comes close!
ReplyDeleteI love all the iron chandeliers!
ReplyDeleteI love the table lamp No. 023-the colors are fabulous.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway!

Yay! I love the custom hand-made one-light lantern on 1st Dibs. Its gorgeous!! I love the fact that you can do one light or a cluster of several lights and I love the aged coloring.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the belgian floor lamp. I know exactly where I'd put it. Thanks for a wonderful giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful giveaway!! I absolutely love the tole and iron sconces found on 1stdibs. I think they would look darling flanking a kitchen window above the sink. What lovely fixtures to look at while washing dishes! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks again Joni!

Best giveaway ever! I'm in love with both the trumeau (behind the louis philippe mirror in the photo) and the antique oil painting of a beautiful dog. What a gorgeous, unique store and website. Thanks Joni and Brown.
ReplyDeleteOh, the vintage iron basket light is just my style and just what we NEED! Could get lost looking at all the pretties. :)

Awesome giveaway! I love the no. 019 ceiling light fixture made of sticks. I love anything natural!

i loved the mortar and pestle, not only because they are beautiful, but because they are useful--to crush the herbs that i use for paella! my favorite is the light fixture for the give away. i've been looking for an entry light over my round table and this would be perfect. cammie churdar churdar864@charter.net
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love her shop! I would choose the simple 5 light sconces. They remind me of the time my husband and I took a 8 day date to Rome!!! I saw some that looked similiar. I love the pure beauty of them and it just makes me happy everytime I look at them! Isn't that what our homes should be about?!

I find it very hard to choose just one thing - but if I had to....
ReplyDeleteWho can resist those scales!
Wonderful shop... I am north of Houston in Conroe so I'll have to check them out. Great giveaway by the way. I browsed and enjoyed the shop in general; but what caught my eye is the hunting dog picture no 001 in the gold frame. I've had a thing for dogs lately.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win the beautiful chandelier. Take care.
Probably a good thing for my bank account that I am just now learning about Brown! So many beautiful things! My favorite light fixture is probably the one being featured in the giveaway but if I had to pick a second fave it would be no. 004. I love the greenish tones and the drippy candles!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely LOVE the no. 10 drum ceiling light! Sooo hard to find a great chandelier for a boy's room and this one is perfect! (We have to begin their aversion to ceiling fans early ;))
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love everything, but I really need a floor lamp, and the Belgian floor lamp is really exquisite!!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI love the marble top metal table 001. It is exactly the table I have been looking for to finish a bedroom.
ReplyDeleteSuch incredible items of beauty! If you want my favorite it is probably Chandelier # .039, but the one from "Light Brown", #.006 is incredibly simple and beautiful as well. If I win, (I can only hope!!!!) my email is pjkinatl@hotmail.com. Thanks for offering such a GREAT giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI live the trestle table no. 009. I like the lighting, too. martiherndon2 a t g m a i l d o t c o m

Out in the sun they slave away

No 17 under Ceiling Lights. Love the coral look! Love your blog even more! Thanks Joni and Jill!

I actually am not entering as I won a gorgeous lamp on Art by Karena this week--no need to be greedy! But I just wanted to say how gorgeous and how happy it makes me to see beautiful lights! Beautiful lighting, beautiful experiences with friends...!
ReplyDeleteI adore the trestle table (# 002) in the furniture section. It is so beautiful and would look great in our home.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway, thanks!
OMG!OMG! This chandelier is so beautiful and this look has been in my thoughts for some time. I visited the website and there are so many pretty things in the shop. I wish I could visit your shop. I would pick the beautiful three light sconce no. oo4ff. I read Jill's statement where she said that she would rather have things for her house rather than have personal things for herself. This is the way I am also. I had rather have for example, slipcovers than have gold and diamonds. I want others to enjoy the home warmth that these thing add to a home. Thanks for sharing.

I'm voting for the Unusual Belgian Root Chandelier. It's fabulous. Thanks, Joni for all the Belgian inspired articles. I'm converted!
ReplyDeleteI really like the crown chandelier. Just wish I lived a little closer to visit her shop!
ReplyDeleteI love no. 017 table lamp! Gorgeous! This would be so beautiful in a bedroom, and add such a unique touch. This giveaway is fantastic! I am right in the middle of finally working on my dining room (last room in my house to finish!), so this could not be more perfect timing if I were to win. Crossing my fingers!
ReplyDeleteThanks,

Love the wall print No. 011!
ReplyDeletesjenk25847@aol.com Laura
How exciting to have you us about Jill's store! I loved it all...my favorite would be the round silver sphere with the rosette on the side! Though I must say it was difficult to decide!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win that chandelier! I have been in search of one for my family room and that would certainly make a statement! Beautiful!
Will keep my fingers crossed!
debbie.e.monaco@gmail.com
I love the table no. 007. It has beautiful lines.
ReplyDeleteOh love the store!! Amazing, unique pieces! I love anything that looks like there is a story behind it!
ReplyDeleteI chose a fabulous table no. 002. I dream of a large family on a ranch one day and this just makes me feel like it could possibly come true! Fabulous, rustic table with so much character!
The chandelier is just gorgeous and would make an amazing statement in my home!
keelytrout@yahoo.com
I have slowly but surely been changing my house from shabby chic floral to neutral French-inspired and the minute I saw table no.009, I was in love! This would be perfect for my dining area. Of course, the chandelier would look beautiful hanging above it! :) - Maren
ReplyDeleteI would love love love this fixture. I am excited about finding lovely lighting for my home so I chose the beautiful and very different no. 008ff. as just one of my favorite things. If I win, it's going above my dining room table. Yeah!
ReplyDeleteIn the furniture division there is a fantastic bistro table with orange legs that would go anywhere with anything....love it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a generous giveaway! We are about to move into a new house--larger than our current--so I'm looking for wonderful pieces that will stand the test of time. No. 008 in the tables is gorgeous! I also love the chandelier in the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWOW....I LOVE everything in Brown. How do you pick just one?! The piece that speaks to me personally though is the Vintage Belgian School Chart Showing Pedestrian Safety. This school chart speaks to me because Jill hosted a one of a kind event at her store for Yellowstone Academy, a non-profit school here in Houston. This school chart reminds me of Jill's generosity to Yellowstone and the FUN night we had at Brown for the Yellowstone event. I still hear people talking about that night!!And man, can Jill throw a party!!! If you have never been to an event hosted by Jill... it is a MUST. I bought a light fixture at the Brown-Yellowstone event, and I would do ANYTHING for this fabulous chandelier that you are giving away. I love it... just like I love Jill and Brown!!

no. 15 chandelier- dressy without being fussy and original but still subdued enough to play well with others. Could see it every day without getting bored. Lurve it!

kathleen_patrick@sbcglobal.net
Wow! Select ONE item? I would need to spend at least an entire day just looking at everything - what an amazing store!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the chandelier, in fact I MUST HAVE that chandelier, so please pick me! From the shop, I love all the items in the "mercantile" department. If I had to choose one favorite it would be the rusty-looking one-bulb lantern, number 021 ff. It spoke to me!
I read the vision and philosphy of Brown and I applaud you!
Thank you both for this amazing giveaway!
I love light fixture no. 003. It looks like a crown of feathers. It could go modern/eclectic/traditional. Very functional and different. Thanks Brown for the tour!

I love Brown! I would love #16 lantern with an edison bulb!
ReplyDeleteCeiling light # 37 would look great in my mainly white, gray and brown contemporary entryway but the giveaway light would look even better.

I too wish I had this store in my town... next time I'm in Houston. I loved No 006 mirror. Have been looking for something different to hang in living room.
ReplyDeleteso hard to choose but #003 light fixture is so unique, even to the other Brown offerings
ReplyDeleterubinson227@verizon.net
The round table with carrara stone mantel, love the look.
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful store! love all the pictures on the shop site, but i think i like the eye chart as a 'speaks to me personally' pick! not sure why... just has a great feel to it! i LOVE the giveaway light fixture- it would be perfect in my dining room! right now i'm surviving with a spray-painted reject fixture, and a little bit of Brown would make the room really sing! : )
ReplyDeleteLove everything at Brown! Dreaming of a store like this in good ol' Lubbock, TX!! I am still in love with the iron and glass 4 light lantern!!
ReplyDeleteI love the wall sconce no. 005 ff. When I moved into my 200 year old house, I wanted all the hardware, lighting, etc, to have the brushed nickel look. So rather than buy new sconces, I spray painted my historic bronze sconces silver. They are ruined, and I am an idiot! I'm reminded of this everytime I turn on my lights! I'd love to have these sconces to replace them!
ReplyDeleteMost of all, I love the light fixture in the giveaway. But if I were to choose another favorite, it would be the Hand Forged Wrought-Iron Pendant Light as I love the simplistic tear drop design and have the perfect place to hang it!
ReplyDeleteKristy Wall
kristywall@sbcglobal.net
What an awesome giveaway! I would love to have the Belgin Floor lamp! Brown is a beautiful store!
ReplyDeleteRobyn C. freerobyn@yahoo.com
Wow, Joni! You have outdone yourself! I admired the room you did when you first posted it and it still delights me. As for the giveaway, I admit to being stumped to choose ONE thing, but I managed to do it. I love that sweet oil painting of the dog; #001. And of course, if you want to send everything else, I'd be happy!
ReplyDeleteThis is not the first time I have used Brown for inspiration. I cannot resist the exquisite coral chandelier--#017. Such an elegant look. Thanks, Joni, for such a consistently wonderful blog!
ReplyDeletepurchasing.sal@gmail.com
OOH! I am loving this new (to me) site! I had never heard of Brown since I live on the east coast. Those fixtures speak to me! I would love to have the 4-light hanging lantern #.024ff. It is gorgeous! Of course, there are several others I would like to have, but that's my choice right now. I would love to win the giveaway! It would fit right in with the decor in my colonial home!
ReplyDeletelorettacampbell51atgmail.com
Hi Joni, I'll take ONE of everything in this beautiful shop! I have to say there are so many things to love but I fell hard for the Sphere shaped iron lantern #004ff.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Sherry
I love looking at this website... I visit from time to time and wish I lived in Texas! If I have to choose only 1 item that speaks to me "personally" - it would have to be no. 001 under ceiling lighting. The silver chandelier reminds me of my mother. It reminds me of some beautiful silver candlestick holders she had. I would always pick them up and admire them when I was a little girl. I always thought her silver was so pretty and it just takes me back and it is just beautiful! Thanks, Stephanie email: saddington@bellsouth.net
ReplyDeleteWHAT a giveaway. i have to be honest and say ive always loved that original fixture you showed first. loved the understated elegance!

ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing giveaway. While I love so many of the lighting fixtures the piece that really speaks to me is on 1st Dibs. The Napolean III Butcher Block, amazing!

I love so many of the lights but the Crown light catches my eye and takes my breath every time!
ReplyDeleteI loved a lot of the items on her site - but I loved the light fixture that's similar to the one you placed in your neighbor's home.
ReplyDeleteI loved the scales and I love the insect posters from Belgium also!
Linda
What a lovely store. The custom Flush Mount Lights caught my eye. I desperately need a new foyer light. These lights are simple but elegant. Blessings...Vikki

I passed by Brown today on the way to River Oaks Bookstore and BedBath&Beyond thinking I hadn't stopped by in a while. Then I got home and opened your post...so that means I have to go back and look around. I would choose the "Vintage Belgian Barley Twist Wood Chandelier with Eight Lights." How generous of Jill to do this giveaway!
ReplyDeleteHi! What a fabulous store and giveaway! I wish I lived closer - I would love it! It looks like there are many goodies all around, displayed so well & to fit every budget! I enjoyed, so much, reading Jill's "story" under the heading - Vision & Sensibility. I could really identify with a lot of it and I adore how her family have all been involved - just great! You know, I love it all...the light fixtures are so unique, chic, rustic, industrial - love. I adore the wall sconce with the 5 candles -stunning. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love the botanical prints. I've been wanting some for over our sofa.
